Flat pattern DXF export scales incorrectly

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello,

I need dxf files for laser cutting. I tried to export the flat pattern, but when I export the flat pattern, the scale seems way off. It seems odd that I cannot simply convert a dwg to dxf. This is going to be an ongoing issue, I suspect.

The attached file should be somewhere in the 1:4 range (maximum dimension of 25.xx"). The only dxf viewer I have returns a measurement in excess of 200"

I'm hoping for some help.

E

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Fusion 360 community!

Thanks for posting.  As I opened the attached file with Autodesk DWG True viewer and measured some lengths, it seems to be correct with the scale noted in the drawings (it was 1:8 for sheet1; 1:5 for sheet2).  If I missed something, can you please share more information about this?  Did this happen after converted to DXF?

Thank you.

Hi Kanehiko,

I am unable to use Fusion 360 to convert the correctly scaled DWG to a DXF. The DWG I attached in the first message is scaled correctly, as you mentioned. The issue I have is that I need a dxf to laser cut and I will need dxf's often. I downloaded a trial of AutoCAD LT to get over this hurdle, but need to determine a solution.

This time I attached the DXF which is the incorrectly scaled export. I generated this by activating the design flat pattern and exporting.

Thanks for your reply,

I have the same problem. I did notice that is seems to be exporting in Centimeters instead of what is active in the drawing. I know dxf files used to import with Centimeter measurements and then I think they fixed it but maybe they haven't fixed the export option?

Or maybe it is a setting option I am not seeing?

I seem to be running into a similar issue with the DXF not comin out to the size I require. I'm fairly new to fusion but if I draw in 1:1 scale why am I not getting a 1:1 DXF export? I need my files to go on a laser and these extra steps make this software cumbersome and less desirable to use. I cannot even open it in AutoCad with out Dimensions changing . example a .625 hole is coming out to 15.875 what am I doing wrong? my units are in Inches so not really sure what I am doing wrong

@ronaldrose1

What are your AutoCAD units -dwgunits with the preceding - sign as shown?

Attach your *.f3d file, and resulting *.dxf and *.dwg files here.

This will be an easy one to solve.

to my knowledge the everything should be set to inches and scaled 1:1 but I am still fairly new to the more advanced settings most my experience has been in only 2d cad and never really messing with the settings since I didn't own the software at the time.

There's no flat pattern in the f3d file. When I create one the units in the flat pattern are in mm, do you see the same?

Are you creating a flat pattern? The screenshot is not in the flat pattern workspace.

the 2 pictures are a before and after I select to create a flat pattern. I guess my confusion is I come from mostly just AutoCAD and really have only ever needed 2D. In my brain I should be able to draw a sketch and save that flat so I can have my laser file and then finish modeling the part so I have a 3D model. I set preferences to English In ,psi

Can you share an f3d design where you've created the flat pattern? The DXF you shared above is in mm, so 5/8 is coming out at 15.85mm

Thanks Mark

If you use insert DXF from the insert menu it shows what units the file uses.

As you can see mm for your DXF.

Edit. If I create a flat pattern set to inches and export it inserts back into Fusion as inches.

created a flat pattern and saved. far as I can tell I was in Inches measured after and it was in Inches and correct size. I imported as well and had the same problem with the flat coming in as MM. I exported another DXF so this one I just created. I'm sure I'm missing some silly setting just cant see what it is. thanks for reaching out and helping out. when I just draw in AutoCAD and not Fusion I dont have that problem importing into my NC Post

There's no flat pattern saved in this file! I can't test if you don't save the file with the flat pattern.

The DXF file you just shared is in inches.

Also when i open in ZW3d it shows inches where used to create the file. I guess the program you're opening the file with is overriding the setting or just ignoring it.

thank you again for the assistance I started a personal project from scratch making sure I had everything in the proper units before progressing. and was able to import it into my NC writer software ( merrymech). so I'm guessing I missed a step somewhere on the model I was sharing earlier. thanks again I'm sure you'll see me asking dumb questions again have a great weekend !!
