EXTRUDING IMAGE FROM SVG FILE

Hi all, really new to Fusion 360 and been getting on fine until this little issue Ive been having.

I have inserted an SVG file (first time inserting anything) of a butterfly and I want to extrude the thin lines but unable to. I am guessing I am missing a few steps.

I can extrude any of the sections in the middle (the cut outs in blue in the image).

Any help would be appreciated and please treat my like a complete noob.

Thanks Capture.JPG

You say that you want to extrude the thin lines. Do you mean the lines themselves or the area between the actual lines? At most with the lines themselves you could make surfaces from then that go perpendicular to the line. That doesn't seem useful though so I'll assume you mean the area between the lines.

I would try to start a sketch and project the lines into the sketch. You may not have connected points and that is preventing you from selecting areas to extrude. After you project the lines, check to see if there are gaps between the points need to complete an outline. You should then be able to select an area with a single click before extruding.

Hi,

try Extrude > option “thin extrude”

Please attach your model and also the SVG file.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a forum post to attach it.

Hi all, thanks for your replies. The thin extrusion only extrudes the lines. Attached here svg file and the model.

I’ve actually managed to do this now using a .dxf file but still interested to know if you can do it with a .svg file.

ok. Just tried my exact explanation and it worked. The outer line is not connected. I can easily extrude the inner parts without issue.

So, project the lines in a sketch. Double click the outer one when doing projection to select all parts and not just a segment.

There are some issues with multiple things that I did not look far into. Attempting to project every shape ends up with an error that will not allow you to project because the lines to not overlap. That was the error, overlap whatever error.

So, I selected the outer line only and projected that onto the sketch. Then, i extruded that shape to a height. Then I could use the original svg shapes as an extrude tool to cut back through the model. Goal achieved.

I created a screencast and it is processing now. Here is the link, I could not embed it here because the server is taking its time.

Actually, I cannot embed it here at all. It is up and viewable. Not sure how to add it any longer.

Finally worked after finding how to get it to show by using the reply. It will not show up in a post for some reason.

If you use the HTML option, Screencast will normally embed just fine.  Here is yours.

After not commenting on this topic for a long time, I'm doing it again here.
I'm doing this primarily to bring it back into focus with the people responsible for these forums, and I ask for your understanding that I'm using this thread for that purpose.
The integration of screencasts in whatever form probably works for many users, but for many others it does not.
This is how it has been for me for almost 2 years now.
I'm not giving up hope that AD employees  @jeff_strater  and @Phil.E could do something.

Hilarious. I found your other thread talking about this when I couldn't do it. Then someone said to reply to my own and the option would show. Then I did that, it did show up and then didn't actually add it to my reply.

Thanks for that. I was getting tired of adding messages attempting to do it. I didn't even see the embed code button in the screen cast page at the time. I think I need to turn off the dark them in my browser. Sometimes hyperlinks do not show on dark pages.
