Extrude Cut "No target body..."

I've been modifying an STL file to try and split it into parts, and adding pegs to the others. Now, however, I've run into the issue at hand, where I can't extrude a cut into the model. I've found it only allows me to extrude a cut when it travels all the way through the model, but never simply into the center of it. I've attached the f3d file, and thanks in advance!

this body is not a solid - it is a surface body.  Solid Extrude Cut only works on solid bodies.

I tried stitching these surfaces, and it shows some open edges.  You'll need to find out why these are open and see if they can be patched up.  Then Extrude should work

Thanks Jeff,

I've been using the stitch tool to patch up most of the open edges, but two free edges still remain. Do you recommend any fixes to patch these up? It's quite odd that these are considered free edges when they're inside of the model, not on the actual surface.

Apologies - it was late last night, and I did not take the time to follow this all the way through.

This is just how stitch works.  If there are any free edges, it does not convert to a solid.  It turns out that there were just 2 floating triangles:  One that was owned by the main body, and one in a standalone body.  Deleting both of those allows the stitch to succeed and convert to a solid.  Fixed model attached.

No problem, the project doesn't need to be finished for another couple weeks or so anyways. In any case, thanks a lot, Jeff! I went ahead and tried your fix, and now it works perfectly.
