Export to STL error not meaningful

When trying to export to STL, if the body name contains a slash (/) character, Fusion shows this generic message: "Autodesk Translation Services failed to translate the current document to stl file! STL Translator failed to export data". The message should help the user solve the specific problem. The current one is not actionable.

For now, if you get this error for some of the bodies, make sure the name of the bodies and all parent component names don't include characters that are invalid for a file name.

Characters to avoid: " (double quote), * (asterisk), < (less than), > (greater than), ? (question mark), \ (backslash), | (pipe), / (forward slash), : (colon)

Hi @mihai.stanimir ,

I tried to export a simple body to .stl with few characters you listed and i was able to export successfully.

There was a similar issue reported in this forum thread.

Exporting stl may be failing due to below 2 reasons.

  • Fusion 360 service might have "degraded". you can check the status in https://health.autodesk.com page.
  • For larger data Fusion, fusion translator is consuming huge memory and fails, defect (FUS-79012).

Until it gets fixed, Use Save as STL from the root browser node.

Do let me know if this workaround works for you.

Interesting. I've been using the Save as STL from the root browser node. In that particular case only the bodies with weird names weren't exported (on Windows).

Later it did happen with a different project to not be an issue with the body names. Not sure what it was, that's why it should explain what's not working and/or how to fix it.

@mihai.stanimir ,

If you are still able to see the issue on a specific project, Would you be able to invite me (Sujay<dot>dsouza<at>autodesk<dot>com) to that project?
That'll help us investigate the issue and see.
