Exploded view trail line origins in the assembly environment

Hi folks,
When exploding assemblies in the animation environment, is there a way to force the trail lines to start from their relative joint origins?
I have some layers of plywood, each aligned to the next with wooden dowels.
I want to first explode the plywood layers, then explode the dowels from their respective layer. For example, in the attached screenshot, the three highlighted dowels are joined to the holes in the plywood layer directly below them (middle layer), however, when I add trail lines for the dowels, the bottoms of the lines start where the dowels originally started before exploding the plywood layers, rather than relative to where they join to the middle layer, which is the behaviour I would expect. There are arrow handles on the trail lines, but I can only extend them downwards.
I've tried moving the layers with their respective dowels in one move and then moving the dowels again in another move, but it still always uses the original origin. 'Split Transforms' also doesn't help.
The only way I've found to make it look how I want is to initially explode the layers in the design environment, but then I need a duplicate and it just feels like a messy way to do it.
Any help greatly appreciated!
