Error when using pattern on mask Form

Hi there,

I created a mask following the tutorial of Etienne K, which I find fantastic! I can only recommend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVlQwwjBswg

Now I would like to add a ring around the eyes that has the same shape as the eyes. For that I am trying to use the pattern function on the faces that currently make the eye shape to create a copy of the current eye shape.

However, I get an error, no matter which way I try.

Anyone has an idea why that is or what I am doing wrong?

Many Thanks and best regards!

can you add some more detail about what you want the result to be?  You mention pattern.  Does that mean that you want a pattern of protrusions or holes that follow the contour of the eye, but offset?  Thanks for sharing the file, but it does not include your previous attempts to model this ring, which would help clarify the result you hope to achieve.  Thanks.

Hi @jeff_strater,

thank you for your message!

I cannot really upload more as I do not have more. Like shown in the video, the attempts that I did result in an error and do not leave any other objects or faces behind.

My final idea is to print the mask as you see it in PLA and then add rings printed from tpu around the eyes that fit like a u shape onto the pla mask. The hole of the eye would not change much in size (it would shrink by the thickness of the tpu print).so if the side view of the mask is like an I, the rings would fit around it like a u.

I hope that gets the idea across. Either way, I basically just need to find a working way how to copy the faces that I select in the video (basically the faces that currently make the shape of the eye.

Cheers!

I apologize, but I still really don't understand what you want the final result to look like.  What these rings would look like, etc.  I watched the video all the way to the end, but I did not see anything that fit the description you have here.  Even just a hand-drawn picture of what you want the result to be would be helpful.  I noticed the texture here:

but, that is just an appearance, not actual geometry.  Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

first of all, thank you for taking the time and even watching the video. The appearance is not what I mean. I want to make another part, that wraps around the hole for the eye. Here is a picture of my drawing, now my drawing skills are certainly not very good but if you see what I get the error for it might get the message across of what I am trying to do!IMG_20220408_205740.jpg

The left obviously the front part, the right is from the side if you would slice through the mask at any spot of the eye.

Is this even close to what you had in mind?

Hi @jeff_strater,

I have managed to create the shape I wanted. However by a very different way than initially anticipated. Please see the video to see what shape I was talking about. The dialogue and your proposed shape helped me a lot in my thinking process to finally get the shape I wanted. So please dont think it was a wasted effort, it really was not! I will print this and see how it will turn out. There still is an imperfection in my current design, which is the thickness of the "walls" which is alternating. Ideally the thickness of both front facing and back facing wall would be the same throughout. If you have a proposal how to do that, I am more than happy to hear that.

If not, that is also okay, I already appreciate the assistance you gave. Also, I am very happy to finally be able to just show you what shape I meant. Hehe!

Cheers,

Falk

seems like my screencast cannot be properly implemented in my answer at the moment. Not sure what I am doing wrong, but you can find it here:

That can be done entirely with T-Splines.

Also, I would suggest as a beginner you avoid triangles at all cost.
