Error    please save this design before inserting components

i've tried Fusion 360 before and got so frustrated that I deleted it.

Now having just returned I find the  same problem I had then is still with me.

The problem is when I start up Fusion 360 and with it showing no drawing/design on the desktop.

I try to drag a previous design from the LHS to the desktop it always shows "Error    please save this design before inserting components" but as I've just opened the software there is no design on the desktop, so in my mind its got nothing to save..........

Going crazy................................help

drag from the data panel is "Insert into Current Design".  If you want to open a design, double click, or right click and choose Open.

@joh.mail this message is referring to the blank document you're dragging into. You cannot reference another file before first saving the current one so that a link can be created between the two - in this way, updating the inserted file itself will be reflected in the assembly containing it.

Fusion doesn't have a "Desktop" to drag onto, what you're dragging a design from the data panel and dropping it into a new design. If you just want to open an existing design just double click it or right click and select open from the menu.

If you actually want to insert a design into another design it has to be saved first so Fusion can keep the links between the designs.

Thanks people for your replies

I’ve been looking at Fusion similar to word or excel where when you open the software then click new word document and don’t enter any text etc, you can then close it as there’s not been any changes.
I now understand Fusion is ready to go once opened and if I want to open an existing file to double click it. I’ll give it a go tonight
