If I sketch a square, then extrude it. The result turns black, making it very difficult to do anything else.

Is this normal? Or have I screwed up preferences some way?

Can I reset preferences to factory defaults?

Maybe change material to non-black in preferences ?

Currently material is from Fusion 360 library, metal,  steel

Changing it to white plastic makes no difference at all

The image looks like what I had. (It's been changed many times with no difference to the drawing, or recreated drawing).

I think if its not environmental (settings in fusion) it could be graphics. But i'm leaning toward environment.

What are your effects set to and what is the environment?

See attached screen cast for settings. I'm running on Windows 10 Virtualbox on Linux desktop. (god I wish you guys would allow for installation on Linux, I would have been a customer for years now).

The virtualbox doesn't have any problems with other graphics, but is nothing special. 3d and 2d acceleration is enabled. Resolution is 1920x1080.

It's 'possible' that is the cause but i'm not seeing any screencast or screenshots showing your settings.

First test best performance vs display and then I'm looking for is this:

I'm not sure what you are referring to with testing best performance vs display. Is this a built in test, or something windowish, or an external test?

I've tried adjusting all those settings, currently effects are:

ground plane

ground shadow

ambient occlusion

environment is :

infinity pool

Changing the environment changes the backdrop but the model remains black.

You have settings turned up rather high with all those on. it may be what's causing it to tweak out. Disabling the effects, and using better performance vs display. Test DX9 instead of Auto or DX11 in General settings.

You could try tweaking the active graphics driver as well but i'm not sure this would do it.

Tried changing to dx9 and removing all effects, going as simple as possible. No difference.

It really seems to me like it's just putting the wrong colors on. When I mouse over a plane it turns gray. So it can update the colors ok.

The test for that would be resetting your materials overrides or assigning different materials. At some point you have to look at graphics drivers and see what its at. This is not a recommended or supported configuration and its not easy to pinpoint.

Well, for completeness sake, here are the graphics drivers specs.

Windows Displays the graphics drivers as "VirtualBox Graphics Adapter (WDDM)" and uses memory from 0xa0000 to 0xbffff (131071 bytes)

The VirtualBox has settings of 256MB display memory (not sure why it's different) 200% scale, 2d and 3d hardware acceleration enabled.

Virtualbox is running on a machine that is using an NVIDIA driver 418.23

Perhaps it's the scaling that is causing problems.

It looks like virtualbox doesn't support graphics as well as claimed. Running an opengl test, it all passed, but didn't actually show anything on the screen!

So I'm beginning to suspect the problem is with virtualbox. Thank you for your help.
