Dimension Tool Won't Move Components Rather Resizes Them To Satisfy Dimensions

I'm trying to draw a honeycombe inside a circle. Tutorials suggest drawing a cluster of 4 and using a rectangular pattern to distribute evenly. When I go to equalize and narrow the distance between those first 4 hexagons, instead of budging them into position, Fusion just resizes the polygons instead to satisfy the new spacing dimension. I'm guessing this has something to do with constraints and it's driving me bleeping mad too. Furthermore, a lot of the dimensions between two lines are showing up as angular degree dimensions, I'm guessing because I failed to draw perfectly parallel polygons.

Hi,

If you follow the recommendation to do the pattern in body mode, it is very simple.

This also applies to parameters.

In addition to @g-andresen  response, I do not see where you have dimensioned the size of you hex.

Dimensions should be specified for both position and size.

Thank you gentlemen. Unfortunately, I do not even know what tool that is that Guenther has demonstrated. Never seen it before and don't know how to open it. As far as insufficient dimensions, I used the polygon tool in sketch mode and there is only one dimension required, a distance from the circumscribed center to the apex of a point for hexagons. Per Youtube tutorials, the instructor draws 4 of these, adjusts the inter distance using dimension, draws a box around that cluster and uses the horizontal pattern tool to fill the circle. I jst have to go out for a bit and I'll have a look at the attached file Guenther included, when i get back.

File>Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here.

I think I can demonstrate an easier technique for you to follow than the technique presented by @g-andresen as his technique requires a bit deeper understanding of Parameters.

Edit:  Oh, and include the link the the YouTube references so that I can see what they are doing to cause confusion.

Rectangular Pattern > open in "SOLID"  > "CREATE"  > Pattern > rectangular pattern

I then create the pattern in diagonal directions and not horizontally/vertically.

@TheCADWhisperer

How deep must the understanding be from your point of view?

Here is a screencast explaining Version 2.

File attached. Here's a link to the video. Another problem, as mentioned, that I was having was my spacing dimension was being expressed like an angular degree (eg. "0.0794 deg") instead of linear dimension. I think that means that the hexagons were not properly aligned with parallel edges. Constraining them as parallel seemed to be a temporary fix but I have no idea why they can't sort of "snap to grid' also for proper 2 dimensional orientation. So anyway, if I try and narrow the distance between two of these hexagons, the center point doesn't move, rather it just enlarges one of the hex's until the gap satisfies the typed dimension. I want these **%$** to move, just like in the video, not sit there and shrink or enlarge. I haven't looked at Guenther's remedy yet, still, but I suspect he's also using the horizontal pattern tool but his parameter list is just displayed different than the vertically oriented list box I see when using that tool. Thanks.

No link to video?

That list is in Modify>Parameters...

It helps if the OP even recognizes Parameters table.

You are missing a Vertical constraint on one of the sides of your initial Hex.

I recommend not creating additional sketch geometry until previous geometry (the original hex) is fully defined.

Only one sketch hex is needed.

From the file I attached above - you can see that you only need one hex.

Thank you for providing the file., for some reason when I follow the same YT video here I am not able to select the sketch ( a hexagon sketch made with the Polygon tool)  and create a pattern from it on my file, but on your files works every time even if I create a new sketch... 🙂 Any idea what might be causing this?

OMG, Forget you ever saw that video, sketch patterns like that are not recommended.

How many segments were selected for the ring?

You will likely find the Whisperer used modelling’s Rectangular pattern.

Might help.....
