Desktop PC hangs in Hibernate after every Fusion update

Something I've had happen periodically on my desktop PC (Windows 10) is that when I Hibernate it, it will put up the Hibernating popup, screen goes black, but keyboard/mouse never turn off, the fan stays on, and the power light stays on. Unable to wake it up, power button does nothing, only way to get it back is to hold in the power button to force the reboot. Makes no difference how long I wait for the Hibernate to complete, hours even, never happens.

So, whats that got to do with Fusion, you are probably asking? I didn't make the connection till this past month - it ONLY happens after Fusion drops an update, I do the restart of Fusion app, and all seems fine. Then, Fusion gets shut down as normal, all seems fine, till I try and hibernate the PC - and it hangs as described. It only does this after a Fusion update, and is happening every single time. Just happened this afternoon after the update was applied. Happened the other day from the previous update.

Today I checked the Task Manager after the update and after closing fusion, and before hibernating it. No Fusion tasks were running - the Streamer.exe one ran for a while after closing Fusion, but it went away after a minute or so. The only one still running was the Autodesk Analytics Client Service, which always seems to stay running. Also have checked the system even logs, dont see anything unusual there either.

Any thoughts as to why this is happening??

Should have mentioned that no other apps or windows updates occured in days around the fusion update - the fusion update was the only thing changed that day.

Another Fusion update installed today - and the same issue happened as I reported with this thread. After the update finished, restarted Fusion, all was well. Shut down Fusion, went to Task Manager to see if it was all done, had to wait a couple minutes for the Streamer.exe (used by Fusion in updates apparently) to finish. Then hibernated the PC, and it hung partway through - screen went blank but all power stayed on. After 15 minutes of waiting just in case there was something else it needed to do, I hard powered the PC and rebooted it. All seems fine after the reboot. There are no errors I can find in the Windows event log related to this.

Same thing happens EVERY time after a Fusion update. No problems with any other apps, nothing else had updated today.

Still no response from Autodesk on this report - anyone there even reading this???  Hello??

Tried another test - changed the setting so the PC uses Hybrid Sleep mode, and after the update today it DID turn off the PC correctly. BUT, on wake, it rebooted the PC instead of just waking it up!!

Hey Autodesk, how about at least acknowledging that you are seeing this bug report from me??

Another Fusion update today, and once again, exact same problem - after the update and Fusion restarts, all is fine. Shut down Fusion application, a while later try to Hibernate the PC, and it hangs partway through. Won't react to power button or any others, screen is blank, but tower and devices are still powered on. Have to hold in the power button for a while to force a hard power off and cold boot again. Stilll no response from Autodesk - anyone there? Not what I expect as a fully paid user!

I use Windows Sleep mode instead of Hibernate and I can leave it in this mode with Fusion 360 running and come back anytime without issue.  Hibernate does a lot more aggressive system suspension than Sleep but I have always found Hibernate does not get along with a lot of applications. If you search the web, you will find the majority of opinions expressed do not recommend using Hibernate.

Hi John,

Thanks for the info.

The reason I prefer Hibernate is that if the house power blips while the PC is hibernated, it will still come back with the current state, where with Sleep it will do a full reboot after a power loss. They are doing lots of power pole replacements and upgrades around here, and brief power losses are just that little too common.

I have Hibernated with Fusion still running, and that does work fine. It is just Hibernating after a Fusion update that gives issues, even with Fusion shut all the way down (and I have checked Task Manager and all the Fusion tasks are done).

I've never had issues with any other applications, just Fusion, on this.

Have you checked that streamer.exe has finished before hibernating? I really don't like programs that give you the option to close and restart themselves as I've had it go wrong too many times! I always close Fusion, open task manager and wait for streamer.exe to close before restarting Fusion or closing down. Also I also use Win 10 with hibernate and have no problems.

Yes - I did notice that the Streamer.exe runs for a while after the update, and I DID wait for it to finish before hibernating these last several times, made no difference. Some of the times its been an hour or more before the Hibernate, some of the times its several minutes, same result either way.

Its got to be something that the update sequence is doing and not cleaning up from, since its only after an update that this happens.

I saw you mention this bug in another post and I believe I saw the same issue (where my machine would wedge on sleep) during the time 2.0.14567 was failing to install correctly. I suspected it was Fusion because the machine would sleep cleanly if I didn't open it and would wedge if I did. I didn't get around to writing a post because I eventually forced a reinstall of 2.0.14567 and it stopped being a problem.

Certainly feels like some part of that process is getting confused and not cleaning itself up correctly. The last three or so updates have failed to install correctly, so my guess is I'll be in a position to watch for this issue during the next update.

Hey @crueby1  @bentwookie

Next time this happens, try this text command - maybe it will show us what process is still running. I'll see if I can reproduce.

Cheers,

Karina

I will try that the next time Fusion updates. Be aware - the Hibernate goes partly into effect, the popup for entering hibernation shows, cpu appears to turn off and screen goes black, but none of the peripherals power down, by that I mean that keyboard/mouse/power lights still on and fans still running. After that happens, nothing will happen no matter how long it sits in that state (tried waiting hours), and power button has no effect unless I hold it down till the board does a full hard reset.

I'll try that command on next update and post back here...

Same. In my case the screen had already gone into standby. What I'm more likely able to do is make note of the time and then root around in Event Viewer for anything funky after the machine reboots.

Okay, there was an update to Fusion today. After the update finished and Fusion restarted, everything seemed okay inside Fusion. Closed fusion, and waited about 5 minutes or so for the Streamer.exe task to finish whatever it was still doing and quit. While it was running, I did the requested powercfg /requests command, which showed None in all categories. After Streamer finished, ran the command again, and same results:

DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
None.

AWAYMODE:
None.

EXECUTION:
None.

PERFBOOST:
None.

ACTIVELOCKSCREEN:
None.

So, apparently none of that is the issue. I also ran a tasklist command, the results of that are attached in a text file, in case that can tell you anything.

After that, I tried to hibernate the PC, and yet again, it hung partway into the hibernation - the screen went black, as it should, but none of the peripherals powered off (keyboard, mouse, fans, power light all still lit up). Could not wake the PC, had to hold in the power button for a while to force it to hard cycle the motherboard (easier than getting back to the plug).

Oh, and for those that in the past have said to use Sleep rather than Hibernate, I have tried that after Fusion updates, and Sleep hangs in exactly the same way!
