Default Setting When Extruding In Positive Direction

I've been having issues when extruding. I work with hundreds of separate bodies of all sorts of different materials and appearances. When adding on to my designs, the extrude function defaults to "join" whenever I extend an already existing feature; and more often than not, that feature is making contact with other bodies with different appearance. This causes a complete meltdown where the program completely freezes up for as long as 10 minutes while the computer is trying to figure out how to combine numerous different bodies with all different properties assigned. If the default setting were simply "new body" this would not happen.. At least not by default. And if one accidently creates a new body where it was intended to be joined, it's much easier to combine than it is to split body anyways. I don't know what I would do without Fusion, I love it in almost every aspect, but I would like to see the extrude function be a bit more versatile. Thanks!

As in many other cases, there are many points of view.
Which one should be preferred?
