Decal moving when making hole, and not able to precise aply decal to face/body

Hello, im having some problem to create holes in my body after i have applied a decal. Im trying to render a PCB i have made and first i made a body for the right size, then applied a decal. But when i try to right click on it and make holes for the soldering points the decal is moving then i try to make the hole in the middle.

I placed the circle in the middle but when i click OK to make the hole every thing is shifting.

But only the middle part, i can do every other soldering point like this without shifting:

As you can see here.

And another problem i have is that i cant apply a decal and resize it to the exact right size using the Texture Editor tool:

Im not able to set the exact size (17.91mm × 15.37mm) at the Scale option it is chancing for me to the closest mm, i think. Only way is to Insert a Decal and then eye ball it to place, and i don't like that in a CAD tool.

Hope you can see my problems and that there is a simple solution for this 😄

Thank you for reading,

/Eric

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for posting. Decals can certainly be difficult to position in Fusion 360 - this is a pain point I've had discussions about before, and there are some Ideastation posts that have been created to bring this issue to the attention of our development team. I would recommend providing any further suggestions for decals on the threads linked below:

The shift you've described seems odd as well - would you mind sharing the file in which you have observed this behavior with me? I'd like to have a look - you can do so using any of the techniques at this link.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for sending the file over. This issue is related to a couple of known issues that the development team are currently investigating.

The problem occurs when a hole feature includes the center snap point of the decal (when the decal is placed). The ticket for the shift when the decal is already applied is internally referenced as FUS-12658, and there is another known issue in which the decal cannot be applied with its centerpoint within an already modeled hole, logged as FUS-12655.

The combination of these two issues makes it very difficult to work around this issue, and I've been unable find a way to work around this is your file. While this is unfortunate, you could consider:

  1. Simply creating sketch geometry to indicate the hole positions and not actually extruding the profiles.
  2. If you would like to extrude the holes, you can extrude new bodies as cylinders, but cannot create cuts - this is what causes the shift problems.
  3. Insert the PNG as an Attached Canvas rather than a decal.

I've commented on these tickets in hopes of increasing the priority - we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Please let me know if you have any questions.

My easy workaround is to create a .0001 body right above the surface that needs the decal. Make the new body out of Gas/Air, then paste the decal on the new body. You may need a hole in your graphic file to match the hole below. PNGs are great for this.

In this rendering, the blue area with the logo is a PNG applied to the Air body. The couple photo is a separate decal.

Thanks for the tip @mjames ! However that didn't render quite properly for me with some glare. I ended up extending the artboard in illustrator to be wider than the decal so that the center would not end up in my cut outs. And yes, the project is work in progress, so not all things are placed or correct on the image but enjoy.
