Data Panel Default Location on Launch

When launching Fusion 360, I'm finding that it opens with the Data Panel inside of a project.  Not only that, it isn't the last project I was working on.  It's an old project that I haven't touched in probably 1-2 years.  Having to constantly navigate out of that project and into the project that I want is irritating.  Not deal-breaking, but irritating.  Supposedly, Fusion 360 should remember where I last saved a design and default to that spot upon next launch.  It does not do this on my machines, both personal and work.  On my work machine, it defaults to "Eric's First Project", which is the original default project when you first create an account.  On my personal machine, it defaults to a different project, likely because I deleted the first project it originally included with my personal account.

I would like to see Fusion 360 either launch to the Home / root directory of the Data Panel upon launch, or open inside of the last project/folder in which I was working.  Even if the intended behavior did function properly, I'd love an option allow the user to specify Fusion to open in the Home / root directory, or remember the last location upon closing Fusion 360.

While not a "bug", searching the forums shows other users are experiencing inconsistency in which project they land in when opening Fusion 360.  So, I'm not the only person experiencing this issue, and it's been around for some time now.

Example threads with complaints of this behavior dating as far back as 2014:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/any-chance-to-select-a-default-project/td-...

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/how-to-change-the-default-project/td-p/987...

I'm wondering if this issue relates to the personal storage in Fusion 360 accounts.  I've heard that the "Single-User Storage" is obsolete, and that users should be utilizing Team Hubs instead.  I'm not sure why that would make a difference.  But, I really don't want to have to shift all of my data to a Team Hub, unless there's an easy way to transfer it.

Hi, Thanks for using Fusion.

Sharing out the AKN page on how to Transfer Projects from SUS to Team (here). Also, there is this list of advantages of moving from SUS to Team.

Difference of SUS and Team.png

In order to avail the benefits of the Team, we encourage you to switch. Also, please remember that once the projects are transferred to Team, they are irreversible

@sasikanth.kollipara, thank you for providing a link to assist with transferring my projects.  Can you confirm if SUS will be removed or disabled for new data at some point in the future?

I'll have to look into it, but I imagine even with a Team Hub that this issue of what location the Data Panel opens up to would still exist there.

Hi @Eric_Schubert

once you move all the projects from SUS to Team, then you will completely switch to the team hub.

And is your question: What will be your default team to launch in Fusion 360? if so, yes you can set the default team to load in Fusion while accessing (if you are part of multiple teams)

If it is for your default project, then currently we don't have that setting as you saw already in other forums.

Thanks, @sasikanth.kollipara. While this helped me get my data moved to a Team Hub, the need for a default behavior of the Data Panel remains. I'll see how consistent it is in the hub vs SUS. But it would still be nice to allow users to set it to always open at the root directory of the hub.

Since you've confirmed that feature doesn't exist, consider this a feature request from the Fusion 360 dev team.

Moving my data to my Team Hub also left out all of my Additive print settings, which need to be transferred manually by exporting/importing, it seems.  Including that data as part of the move to a hub would be nice.  Even including an option to export my entire print settings library at once to import all at once would be nice.  (Either one file that contains everything, or a bulk export/import.)

Good that you were able to move projects. And thanks for the feedback, will pass it to the respective teams.

I'd like to re-open this issue...
Not sure why the solution was accepted but it does not appear to be one, I'll re-post if necessary.

Every time I launch fusion I have to navigate through many projects to get back to what I was working on, fusion should remember where I left the project browser and stay there... The worst part about this is that fusion *used* to do this but all of a sudden it does not.

I absolutely agree with this.

Fusion data panel is always starting inside a project that I haven't worked in for several years. Takes me forever to navigate to where I left off since I have to do this every time I open Fusion 360 which feels like all the time when is crashes on me every time I touch something.

I suggest that you start in the last used folder. If that is impossible, then at least start at the root level.  Don't start deep inside some obsolete project that I'm obviously never accessing.

This must be extremely easy to implement in a proper way.

The only reason I accepted a solution is because there is no solution.  There's no option to set anything from the user side.  I agree, this needs to get escalated and fixed.  It's a small, but hugely-annoying issue.

Hi all,

I agree with  you all, I have the same issue.

I´d like Fusion opening last project or root level at starting.

It´s not critical but quite annoying.

Since it is marked as accepted, they are probably no longer looking at this thread.

I'm baffled by the apathy shown from Autodesk on this issue. There is a parallel thread on this in the Design forum that's been running since November 2020, and at no point has anyone from Autodesk even acknowledged that it's a problem.

Why is this so hard to fix? This has afflicted me for years. It is real, is affecting more than a few folks, and it's just a deflection to respond that we should just change our habits, and not even acknowledge that this is a problem.

In what parallel universe is it intended that every time we start Fusion it takes us to the first project we ever worked on - In my case more than 5 years ago? Every single time. Chug, scroll the project window, find the project, drill down to the correct sub-folder. New day. Chug, scroll...

Please Autodesk, at least tell you hear us and you are taking this seriously.

Hi all,

Please see message 23 on this thread:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-support/doesn-t-open-where-i-left-off/td-p/10499077/page/2

where they did respond with a timeframe for fixing this - took a lot of posts to get that far...

Thanks @crueby1 - So we have at least 3 threads running on this now 🙂

It reassuring to see it being taken seriously though. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
