Combining meshes broken

So I'm working on a project involving lots of merging meshes, and recently my "merge bodies" tool in the mesh menu seems to have been replaced with "combine", which takes forever to do what used to be a very fast operation. Also with at least one set of bodies I've tried it is randomly deleting about 80% of the faces of the finished mesh, leaving useless garbage. Anyone else having this type of issue? Anyone have any good workarounds?

the old Merge capability still exists, as an option in the Combine command, as an "operation type":

I don't have extensive experience with it, but I believe it should be the same as the old Merge Bodies command.

Thank you so much! Glad it's not gone.
