Changing sketch dimension may result in a shadow profile

I think this might be a bug. I have an M2.5 panhead machine screw (attached). I can edit the sketch and change the 5mm
outer diameter to, say, 4mm and that works ok. Edits like that are usually fine - I think I ran into issues because I was creating M3,M4 etc screws from an original design and I was hopping around checking dimensions.
I can get Fusion 360 into a state where the sketch will show a ghost of the previous diameter. For example there are three extrusions in the design I attached:
- Right click the centre one and edit feature. Cancel. Sometimes now the first item in the timeline, the sketch is highlighted. Now I can't right click on it. Not sure this is a big deal. This action seems to matter though when getting a shadow to appear...
- Then I edit the sketch (in the browser) and change 5mm to 4mm. Now I get this:
There's a shadow profile around the outside. That profile isn't based on anything other than something that used to be there and now isn't! But I can now stop the sketch. And if I click on the sketch in the timeline I can see that the ghost is still there. I can even extrude from it too, mostly accidentally!
