Cannot boot in to Fusion 360, gets hung up on a different point each time.

I am using a Dell Precision 5520 with an i7-7820HQ and Quadro M1200. Whenever I go to boot Fusion, it hangs up during the boot, until I attempt to interact with the window, and at that time goes to (Not Responding). Sometimes it gets hung up on a white screen, sometimes just the grid, and sometimes it nearly renders everything. I have made it to a usable state exactly once, and not again in the 30+ attempts since then. I've rebooted, reinstalled (with the clean uninstaller), deleted the login XML, updated graphics card drivers, right clicked and tried to use with both graphics cards (iGPU and the Quadro), and updated windows. Is there any other solution? This is for use as a trial run in a professional setting and it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify to my superiors why we should use this over the tried-and-true solidworks.

@connor.redding Can you please try a couple of things?

1. Can you launch Fusion in the offline mode? (Without an internet connection). Does it launch faster without any issues?

2. When you have Fusion launched can you collect the diagnostic log files and attach it here?Screen Shot 2021-05-27 at 7.13.18 AM.png

I can't click on anything within Fusion, so I can't get the diagnostic files, and offline let's me boot but I can't view my files.

In addition, after turning back on the internet after booting into Fusion, Fusion then crashes whenever I use the data panel.

@connor.redding You mentioned you tried things like uninstall/reinstall, graphics update, windows update etc. In this article are couple more things about network and windows account. Can you please try these and see if there are any differences?

Do you work on dual monitors? If so , does this solution help?

I am not working on dual monitors, and it works fine whenever I log in on another laptop, it only occurs on this laptop specifically. What confuses me is how it has now worked flawlessly twice, but only twice, and the other ~50 times gets hung up. I cannot create other windows accounts as this is a controlled work device.

@connor.redding Can you use this article and collect the application logs and the web services logs and share here please?

@connor.redding There are no attachments. I did get the post crash attachment but not the other ones.

Scratch that - I see the attachments now.

@connor.redding could you please tell me more about both devices? From the logs is looks like this is Windows 8 (or maybe 8.1) is that correct? Does the working device have the same GPU and OS version?

Both devices are running the latest version of Windows 10. The computer that it works on is a Razer Blade Stealth 13 with a i7-1065G7 and a GTX 1650.

My mistake! Windows 10 it is.

On one hand, seeing the UI freeze like this would make me lean towards a graphics issue, in which case we could try a few environment variables to confirm if this is the case.

  1. Right-click on My Computer/This PC on the Desktop or in the Start Menu and select “Properties”
  2. In the left column of the System window that appears, select “Advanced System Settings”
  3. Within the System Properties window that appears, click “Environment Variables” in the bottom right
  4. Within Environment Variables, click “New…” under the System Variables section
  5. For Variable Name, enter QT_OPENGL
  6. For Variable Value, enter software
    • An alternate option to try for Variable Value is angle - edit the aforementioned variable rather than creating a new entry
  7. Click OK to save the new variable
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 with an additional variable:
    • Variable Name = NEUTRON_GRAPHICS_API
    • Variable Value = GLCORE
      • Alternate options include DX9 for DirectX 9, and DX11 for DirectX 10/11
  9. Launch Fusion 360

If Fusion 360 still cannot launch under software rendering conditions, we can likely rule out graphics as a cause, and you can safely delete both Environment Variables. If this ends up working, there are some additional parameters we could try to pin down the cause.

That said, the fact that you can successfully start Fusion while offline, and it does not freeze until attempting to go online, suggests a networking issue such as a proxy configuration or packet/traffic inspector. Would you also please search for "Proxy settings" under the Start Menu and confirm there are no entries?

I appreciate your patience while we investigate this issue!

Sorry for the delay: was waiting on getting admin rights from IT

After both updating the environment variables AND running as administrator, it launches and works consistently. I would greatly prefer to not have to "run as administrator" every time I run the program, is this a known issue?

Would you happen to know which action fixed your issue? It sounds like Admin rights might have done the trick moreso than the environment variables. If you installed Fusion 360 yourself using the streaming installer from the website (as opposed to the IT Admin installer that is pushed remotely for mass deployments), it should install on a per-user level not requiring admin rights - this may suggest a security, firewall, or antivirus policy preventing Fusion from initializing.

Would you be able to try adding Fusion 360 to any allow lists and see if it can launch once again without admin rights? Additionally, please let me know if the environment variables end up being necessary, too.

Both were required to fix my issue, when I disable the environment variables it doesn't run again, and same for when I don't launch as an administrator. It is installed on a per-user basis. When I get the time I can try on different allow lists.

Thanks for the clarification. Are you able to configure your own environment variables for the local machine, or do you require admin rights to do so? Is it possible that the environment variables are only set for the Admin user rather than all users on that device?

As a side note, this probably rules out Antivirus as a culprit given that the variables are still essential to initialization.

I can configure environment variables on the machine, and they are set for all users on the device
It seems that it was a combination of graphics and licensing issues. As we hope to roll this out to other employees I hope we can find a way around the admin rights being necessary for use.

@connor.redding, I am once again considering antivirus as a potential factor. What security suites do you run? Is there any improvement if Fusion 360 is added to their exception lists? There have been cases where, e.g. TrendMicro or Digital Guardian block initialization, which admin permissions might be bypassing. I speculate that one of the sync processes that occurs at startup might be getting blocked (either the traffic, or the directory it is trying to sync to), which could lead to a failure to initialize, but explain why it works when in Offline mode.
