Cannot apply an appearance to a finished form

I am working on a form and I cannot apply an appearance to said form. However when I edit the form I can apply an appearance and it shows, but then goes away to the default color when I finish form. Any solutions to this?

You cannot apply an appearance to the form, only to the converted surface or solid body.

So how exactly would I get it to look like the white in the first picture?

Hi,

Surface elements can only be assigned an appearance on one side.
Either change the direction of the surface (Modify > Reverse Surface) or thicken it to a solid.
