Can't Select Notch Pattern For Extruded Cut on Cylinder

Lord have mercy .....

Made a cylinder. I want to notch out a pattern on the wall and Extrude a Cut through that cylinder wall. When I try and select the pattern that I drew on the wall, it won't exclusively select that pattern area, rather the whole damned cylinder !! I tried messing with some of the selection filters but it did not help.

There is no "Pattern", just a profile set to choose from.

wpytl.PNGAfter cutting you can pattern  them.

I'm sorry Dave, you lost me on this. You seem to have found a way of exclusively selecting this shape ... pattern... call it what you may. I cannot. When I click within it's boundaries, the whole face of that cylinder goes blue, not just the desirable pattern area. Can you tell me how you did that ? Thanks.

OK never mind.... having a Homer Simpson moment. I was clicking on the exterior wall of the cylinder and not on the plane inside the part. I got it now, thanks.

You can also left click and hold, that will bring up a dialog box that will give you different options to select so you can be pointing at the outside surface and still select the sketch profile.
