Can't open any file, that's older than about one week

Two days ago I was unable to open Fusion 360. The user interface looked as if everything was set to default values and I could not start any action. Windows 8.1 said: "Program does not respond".

After reinstallation (after using "Fusion_360_Cleaner") Fusion 360 seemed to work.

The data panel showed ALL files as expected, but I could only open files that I had saved during the last 5 to 7 days. Even the preinstalled samples did not load. Fusion starts to load but after 15 minutes (!) I get the error message "failed to download file"

I also tried to open files via "My Profile" but this showed the same error message.

I would be thankfull for any help, because I have lost all my (hobby)projects.

Hi @g.janas

Could you please try each solution and check whether, are you able to open the file.

  1. Change the name of the file in the Fusion 360 data panel to one that does not contain TAB characters.
  2. Download the file via a public share link and save it with an *.F3D extension before opening.
  3. Open a previous version of the file. If it opens, promote that version. (See How to revert to a previous version of a Fusion 360 design).

Please keep me updated on the issue.

Thanks,

pramod

Hi,

Fusion360 2.0.12392 Win11Pro

Unfortunately it doesn't work. Tried all the aforementioned solutions.

I cannot open any file older than ~1 month.

I had a file last saved in Dec 2021. I also had it's offline copy, same version.

Online version cannot be opened. I tried multiple revisions it is stuck at "Opening Document" for about 2 minutes then

cpm64_0-1645372861233.png

If I try to open the local (offline) copy, it works fine. However if I save this local copy and upload into the cloud then when I try to open it I get the same "Failed to download file".  I also tried to upload it as a new file or on top of the existing file. Tried in different folders, different file name. From this behavior I assume the file is not corrupted , as the offline copy is opening fine.

Another issue I found is related to another cloud document. Latest version is opening fine, however if I try to open previous versions some of them work others fail with "Failed to download file".

I also tried on a fresh, clean VM, OS and Fusion installed from scratch - same issues.

Hi pramod

thanks for your reply.

Here are the outcomes to your proposals:

Change the name of the file in the Fusion 360 data panel to one that does not contain TAB characters.

Changing names did not change anything.

Download the file via a public share link and save it with an *.F3D extension before opening.

Since I only own a personal license, I cannot make the item downloadable. I can open it in my browser, it looks good and complete, but I can't download it.

Open a previous version of the file. If it opens, promote that version.

Opening any previous versions is as impossible as opening the latest version.

But I have found a very time consuming and complicated workaround:

- Open my FUSION TEAM Page

- Open the item I want to use

- Export to Fusion 360 Archive

- Wait for email from Autodesk with download link to .F3D file

- Download .F3D file to local disc

- Open .F3D file in Fusion 360

- Save it

I think, you will agree, that this cannot be the final solution for a 90%+ data loss of a cloud based program. But it shows, that the data isn't really lost. The problem seems to be, that the data isn't accessible from within Fusion 360.

As I already had written, the problem also occurrs with the preinstalled sample files. So this cannot be a problem of the data itself. The problem must be in the link to the cloud.

I hope we will finally find a good solution.

Hi @g.janas @cpm64

Thanks for letting me know that, none of the solutions worked at your end.

Could you please try once by clearing the cache in Fusion 360? Follow the preceding article How to clear the local user cache in Fusion 360.

After clearing the cache, close Fusion 360 and check again after restarting the computer.

Thanks,

Pramod

Hi,

Clearing the cache It doesn't fix the issue.
I also used a second machine, a fresh VM and installed Win11 and Fusion from 0 (just to eliminate any temp/cache issue). The issue is still present.
Thanks,

Hi paramod

sorry, but clearing the cache didn't solve the problem. I can't see any difference.

Hi,

It looks like I have similar problem.

Yesterday I successfully created a new design and everything was working well. Then I tried to generate a milling toolpath in the Manufacturing workspace, and encountered an issue with CAM Kernel. I'm using Windows 7 (I have several reasons for that), so to solve this issue I had to replace camkernel.dll with older version. This required a Fusion 360 restart, and an automatic update happened. After that the problem with opening old designs appeared.

Now I'm able to open only the designs which are cached locally on my PC, local *.f3d files, and local *.f3z files after uploading them. My first thought was that this issue was related to usage of Windows 7, but today I found this thread with very similar problem on Win 11...

I've already tried clearing cache, restarting my PC, opening previous versions of designs etc. with no success. Everything worked just fine before the automatic update (I think that was a version from the end of January) and everything broke after it.

I'm not sure this is related to the issue, but in the log file I see errors like this:

20220221T151149 E 8688 DOWNLOAD 35 https://cdn.us.oss.api.autodesk.com/com.autodesk.oss-persistent/us-east-1/0e/6a/38/51d09e086e96d9b96d89c8f59cfee0444e/fusion.prefs.login?response-content-type=application%2Foctet-stream&response-content-disposition=attachment%3B+filename%3D%22BVPMR3YWPB7V__gmail207819_RecentsWithoutSearch_1.json%22&Expires=1645445627&Signature=ahTZmyXg-6TYLdZNg4D1yhWBtFXaaw0HPYLBfSwbm5ZLghcIZDGNmeJyIgCBHrsxsHvlpiuVToeMbc~oy4YX2~a14dqCAGwZrf-1cC-VnAlBdkGAODjY2sytazmWH1ruESLO1dOu~UVNT7KUjl5laguI~ggqsFKZs44rRZMugYl6J~qi3FLVEQZkoeF2xRN5pnyG0zFQ1~tCqpkw4UbqqbvpDski4Kb2JGNN28buq5kV9hBW5ne~I9iqemMOGhB-emyk5s4xICe8BMb13jEMiGz1u3X0ObZWJfvNImacrspjdf4KOIQhsZMeOAzuJ~eslzRQVgYDZgtO9CX4Dar06w__&Key-Pair-Id=K5HRZD7MMO1U9 dt=0.12 schannel: next InitializeSecurityContext failed: SEC_E_ILLEGAL_MESSAGE (0x80090326) - This error usually occurs when a fatal SSL/TLS alert is received (e.g. handshake failed). when trying to open on old design. Opening the link from the log in a web browser gives no error - a JSON file is successfully downloaded.

Hi @g.janas @cpm64

Please confirm which version of Fusion 360 is being used in your machine.

Refer to this article - https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How...

Now the Fusion 360 is on 2.0.12392 build, as the latest.

Thanks,

Pramod

Sure, as I don't know what kind of sensitive information is shared within the logs, I will share them privately. Just let me know to whom/where should I send the zip.

Hi,

thanks for the hint with the URL leading to cdn.us.oss.api.autodesk.com. In my case I have a pihole set up with DNSSEC which is complaining when resolving that name, resulting is a) an unresponsive Fusion 360 and b) not opening any older files:

Pi-hole - pihole 2022-02-22 22-10-32.png

By turning off DNSSEC Fusion 360 worked as expected. The reason for the "BOGUS" respond lies in the DNSSEC Authentication Chain, see here: https://dnsviz.net/d/cdn.us.oss.api.autodesk.com/dnssec/

The time I'm writing this message, the problem seems to be solved by using a different CDN server. At least the files open again. 😅
