Another Copy/Paste-New Question...

Okay, having read several posts and watched a few screencasts, I'm still in the dark on what I've done wrong: I can't seem to link the sketches for a Copy/Pasted-New component to the new component itself, so when I edit the sketch on the new component it activates in the position of the original component.

Longer version: I created a component from several sketches and then wanted to copy that component and alter it (make it a bit wider, taller, whatever) but any alteration to the new component's sketches references the original.  The screen view snaps back to the original component's position, seemingly no matter what I do...and I can't figure a way around this.  I feel like I'm missing something perfectly obvious, but I can't figure out what I'm doing incorrectly. I'm rather new to Fusion but I am totally striking out on this one; even the screencasts I've been watching aren't helping (and some are so outdated that it's hard to follow what's being done).

So, yeah, any help would be useful.

This is normal.  If you are editing the sketch in the Paste New component it will always return to the position the original sketch was created at.  It will will only affect the Paste New component when you finish the sketch.

If you truly want the sketch to be independent, you will have to Copy/Paste the "Sketch" to a new location.  Then when you edit the sketch of the new component it is truly owned by the new component.

I personally do not see any problem with the Paste New sketch returning to the original created position, it is still independent.

Well, at least it's normal; thank you for that info.  I'm not sure how I'm not copying/pasting the sketch into the new position, because the pasted sketches all display in the position of the new component; it's only when I go to edit one of them, that I see the return-to-original behavior.

As far as whether or not it's a problem: well, it kind of sucks to work around the behavior.  I have a set of twelve components to create, and they're all identical except for a single dimensional variance and a corresponding size indicator marking...so having to visually jump back and forth so many times when I'm creating them is just very jarring.  I created the base unit to begin with, so my thought process for the following series was to start with New Component, then Copy the base unit, Paste New into the activated new component, and then edit the sketches controlling the changing dimension and the size marking.  That's when I kind of hit the "wait, what?" moment.

Is there a better way to achieve this?

The video will show you a way to do this with an External file.  If you have a Subscription License, then Configurations is the best solution.

That does help; I haven't done anything with external components yet, so I'll have to figure that out.  I do have a subscription license, so I'll need to learn the Configurations option as well.

Okay, the external insertion worked pretty well; I can get the independent sketches that I wanted, now.  Thank you for that solution.  Can I ask how I can go about doing this via Configurations?

Configurations is a rather large subject and I cannot do it justice with a simple example.  I have included an Fusion Help Page link where you can start.  Basically, you will be using the exact same sketches for all configurations, they are just suppress or not and you add and edit them in the configuration table.  Take a look for yourself.
