Am I doing this right? Superimposing components over each other and extruding?

Am I doing this right? Superimposing components over each other and extruding?

Hi, I'm cooing from Inventor and I find the whole component structure instead of part/assembly thing just fine, but I ran into a troublesome issue when trying to extrude a part independently of the previous component that it was superimposed over. See my video here for clarification: https://youtu.be/0bygBKG0XQY

Is this how I'm supposed to do this? Am I doing anything wrong? This process feels very off to me...

The visibility of your sketch is turned on but the sketch folder is turned off.  Get in the habit and turning off only the individual sketches and not the folder.  By the way, it would be a lot better to use the Autodesk Screencast application to make any videos.  They show up better plus they show what commands you are using in their history panel.  Take a look at this very simple Screencast illustrating your issue.  Also, you will get a quicker and more relevant answer to your question if you attach you model.  The forum users do not need to take the time to reconstruct a model to give you an answer.
