You will have to create a custom material library because all the rest are locked (see image). Also, if you do not know already, any new materials you create, either by copying and editing or from scratch, need to be added to "Favorites" so you can access them from your model.

This is a great answer, I just couldn't find a way to edit the material.
The internet helped me figure it out though. 🙂
