Why does the sweep tool sometimes go in the opposite direction of the path?

I was trying to do a simple sweep and ran into a problem. If I dont dimension the line I'm using as a path the sweep goes in the direction I want it to. but if I dimension the line the sweep goes in the opposite direction of the line. How do I work around this?
