Unable to select edges while designing at times due to mouse over highlighting surfaces

I have seen questions on how to disable this mouse over which is causing problems, but it has never been as difficult to work with as it is now for some reason. It seems there could be a default setting for this, on or off, or perhaps an alternate key press to disable this function if it gets in the way of production -- Which is most certainly is now. It is so bad in some cases, I am literally stopped from completing a task and forced to find a work-around. I know about display settings and other settings in preferences, but unfortunately I find nothing to fix this, as so many others have stated as well. It seems there is a dogmatic stance here for some reason NOT to fix this, which if true makes no sense to me. Please reconsider this. Thanks.

The easiest way is to use the Selection Priority tools.  Select Edge Priority when you want to select edges:

then, turn it off when you are done.

Would certainly like to see a fix for this especially as selection priority is also buggy. Just like select things my mouse pointer is over lol. Would be nice.

TFW trying to select a face that's super small but Fusion's making me select everything but that face so I need to zoom in so far the camera stops zooming in so I just can't select it lol.

Too complex for no reason I can think of. Why not just fix it? It use to work, so something happened to cause it not to work. Thanks for the recommendation regardless.

I am fairly certain that nothing has changed in this area for a long time.  The default selection filter allows both faces and edges to be selected.  If you are over an edge, you can select that edge, otherwise it will select the face.

You can also try Select Other (long left mouse button press) to get a list of objects that are "near" the selection point (and also along the view axis through to the back of the model).

As I said earlier, thanks. I do not feel this is a solution however. I appreciate the helps though.

Not in this case:

The edge I'm trying to select:

Me trying unsuccessfully to select that edge:

Ok maybe edge priority will help me:

 Again, not always true:

60% of the time it works every time.

Please share that model here.  I have not seen cases where an edge cannot be selected, so it is probably related to certain models.

Attached below. Happens on just about every model though so not specific to this file.

Thanks.  I see the effect.  What I think is going on is that "small edges" (and I suspect small faces as well) are being removed from the list of selections, most likely for performance reasons.  If you zoom in, those edges are selectable, or if you set the filter for Edge Priority (or for just edges), you can area-select that edge.

A performance issue with a model with only 50 polygons.

How about this one where the model couldn't be any closer/lower poly?:

I'm trying to select the grey body, not the orange body behind it. The unobstructed model that my mouse pointer is directly over.
