Trying to create channel in cylinder for shifting drum

I'm trying to create a channel in a cylinder to make a shifting drum. I am trying to utilize the emboss tool to create an initial surface to work with however my channel is self-intersecting by design. How could I have my channel self-intersect without running into errors and maintaining parallel channel walls?

 

I am trying to emboss the projection onto the cylinder.

Hi,

This is because the length of your sketch profile is greater than the circumference of the cylinder.
If you increase the diameter of the cylinder so that its circumference is larger than the stretched length of your sketch profile, it will work.

Yes, I am trying to have the channel intersect so that it is entirely continuous.

Then, when embossing, you must make sure that the length of the profile matches the circumference of the cylinder.
With the debossing option, the length must be reduced analogously to the debossing depth.
Nevertheless, a gap remains between the ends, which must be closed.

To get the true geometry is a bit more complicated (in Fusion 360) than you might think.  It require a Sheet Metal workaround.

I think @jhackney1972  has a slightly more straightforward technique in Fusion - but I cannot find a link to example..

Hi,

Here is another possibility.

The embossing is produced on an unfolded sheet body and transferred to the cylinder by combined cutting after folding back.
