Trying to convert an .stl to a solid to use part align and as stock model

Hi all,

I work for company 3D printing parts using WAAM and I'm trying to take a scanned .stl file and convert to a solid body(t-spline perhaps) but not having any luck. The reason I want to do this is so that I can use Fusion 360's part align feature and so I can also use it as a stock model to reduce air cutting. I have had SOME success but it's really hit or miss whether is works or not. I can always convert the the STL to a solid using convert mesh using faceted or prismatic but this REALLY bogs fusion down to the point that it's unusable, even on a very powerful PC. I've seen a fusion tech use organic but I can't seem to get it to work, even on the lowest accuracy setting using parametric OR base feature. The one way of success that I HAVE had is taking the scan thru a couple different softwares like meshmixer and blender, getting it to a quad mesh then using the form tab to repair and convert to a t-spline. This is a very lengthy and tedious process, which isn't the end of the world, BUT sometimes the process still fails altogether AND the the data is reduced so much I'm unable to use part align accurately. Someone from the Fusion booth at IMTS told a coworker of mine that this was possible so I'm really hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I am missing.

Below is a link, "Part1 V2" is a scan that I've already cleaned up and closed off some pockets that aren't necessary to the process. The folder in the link holds three more files similar, "part 1" in the folder being the same part1 that is already cleaned up.

You can also just align the .stl within Meshmixer in reference to whatever point or model you want.

Thank you hfcandrew for the reply! I should've specified I'm trying to use Fusion's manufacturing part alignment feature for picking up on the part in the machine. We are able to use best fit function in our scanning software to align the scan to the part in reference to the part model origin.

Gotcha. Can you attach in your drive folder the 'cleaned up' part1 .stl.

Sorry you just uploaded the same .f3d file again, not the exported cleaned .stl

I'm asking for that bc Fusion fails often due to many different mesh related issues. Or in this case maybe bc your file is like 2.7M triangles. 0.5M is like already really pushing it.

Oh, sorry! Well....I actually cleaned and repaired this IN fusion, so the file that is in the folder would be the file that I have before taking it into fusion. I have the ability to clean it in the scan software but its much less tedious in fusion with the separate function in Modify tab. Then I used direct edit to delete the the mess of a slot and just used wrap function to close it back up.
