Trouble with tool snapping when following Autodesk Tutorial

After time 1:35 the demonstration snaps to points in the Valve Body component without explicitly projecting the component. In the latest version of Fusion 360 I am unable to have my tool make the same snaps. I first have to project lines from the component using the project tool. Is this an issue with the component I am using or did a feature's functionality change?

Preferences has a switch for that,

Project on reference, means it will only project if you reference the article needed.
