I want to make a groove in a square of wood. I drew a 3" circle in a 4" square. Defined the material to be .75 thick. I want to use a ball mill to make a round slot on top of the piece. No matter what existing tool I select to use, I get a message that it cannot be selected. It worked the first time for two circles and since then it just gives me the same error. I shut down and reopened Fusion, but it still persists.

Hi @spancheau ,

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

The message saying the tool cannot be selected usually indicates that something in the setup or operation parameters is not compatible with the selected tool. This can happen for a few reasons, for example:

  • The operation type does not support the selected tool geometry

  • The tool diameter is larger than the feature being machined

  • The tool library entry may have missing or incorrect parameters

  • The setup orientation or stock definition is conflicting with the toolpath

Since you mentioned it worked initially for two circles and then started failing afterward, it would be helpful to look at the exact setup and toolpath configuration.

Could you please attach the design file so we can review it?

Ideally:

  • Export the file as .f3z (this includes any referenced components)

  • If it is a single file, .f3d is also fine

You can export it from File → Export.

If possible, also let us know:

  • Which Manufacture operation you are using (2D Contour, Slot, Trace, etc.)

  • The exact error message shown when selecting the tool

Once we have the file, we can try to reproduce the issue and help identify what is causing the tool selection error.
