Strange Rib Behaviour

"Error: The selected curve is closed. Edit curve or select another."

It appears to fail when a horizonal constraint is automatically added when creating the line segment. I do have the 'Auto Project Edges on Reference' setting turned on, so perhaps that is related. 

Is this expected behaviour?

With the distance option I could realise it.

While it is possible to use the depth as a workaround, I don't imagine the intention is to have this only work with particular sketches or order of operations.
