Spur Gear script constantly crashes fusion360

Hi,

I've been trying to use the spur gear script to create gears. When I use the default settings the gear is generated correctly.

But when I try my custom gear settings it crashes whole program.

I'm trying to create a 0.8 mod gear.

When I use these settings it works(though this isn't the size I want)

Standard: Metric

Pressure angle: 20 degrees

Module: 0.8

No. Teeth: 24

Backlash: 0

Root Fillet Radius: 0.4

Gear thickness: 10

Hole diameter: 0

If I reduce the no. of teeth to 12 it works as well.(I tried a few lower number of teeth values as well 10,21 and both worked)

When I increased the number of teeth to 30 it crashes. I just tried incrementally increasing teeth, 25 works but 26 crashes.

Is there something inherently wrong with my settings ? I tried using both versions of the script and both crash when I try 26 teeth or higher(other values I've tried include 60 and 84)

Using fusion360 v2.0.4095 on Mac OS X 10.12

Thanks.

Hi Steve,

I'm seeing the same thing on my Mac which I believe is running- 2.0.4099

It's locked at Computing Fillet: 77%

I'm gonna report it to the team.

Hi,

good to know it's not just me.

One thing I noticed is that changing root fillet radius to 0 it seemed to work.

Thanks.

At least that is a workaround. FWIW it does not crash on my PC with any of the values you listed. So its not inherently the values.

For what it's worth, I'm experiencing constant crashes too.

Using version 2.0.4114 on macOS 10.12.6

The workaround, re: setting Root Fillet Radius to zero is working after a few tries, and for my amateur purposes, will suffice, but maybe this is not satisfactory for more advanced users. JMTCW.

UPDATE:

Just after writing this, I added three gears to the workspace, moved each of them, and the very next command crashes the whole thing... 😞

Hi Ryan

Have you heard anything new about this issue?

I have the same problem. 15min ago i was able to do all kinds of gears but then the crashes started and since then i cant create any gears with a root fillet above zero.

Setting the Root Fillet to zero is no option for me since all my other gears in the component have a root fillet of 0.2.

Really hope to hear from you soon since my project is on hold until i can draw gears again.

I also got the same problem on my Mac.

The computing is still staying at 77%. Then the working interface collapses.

Have you got some solutions?

Unfortunately not and I have also not heard anything back from Autodesk.

Hi all,

I am having the same problem.

I also wanted a module of 0.8 with 34 teeth etc and I could once, then the progress bar appears on the bottom and my cpu fans spin up real fast and nothing happens. I also had an attempt where it would show 77% and make no more progress than that. I forced quit the program and tried again. I got this error message (please check photo)

I have a 2011 Mac book pro with 10.11.6 installed.

Thanks

I'm having the same trouble and I use gears a lot. Really annoying since I don't know how to make gears without the script

Hi,

I am having the same problems on my mac (OS 10.11.6 El Capitan). I used to make mod 0.4 gears with the script and it worked almost well ('almost' for the script has always been unstable: stupid error messages, unexpected crashes etc.). Gears are quite important for what I am doing (and for many other users), and now... nothing is working at all, the gear script crashes Fusion 360 each time I am making a customized gear as I used to do (mod 0.4). It really sucks. I am glad I am not paying for this software, it is not reliable, always something to improve, to fix. Always losing time to find a solution on the forum instead of working. Does the word "professional" mean something to you, members of Autodesk ? I am not a beta tester (or am I in fact? Do you consider that these problems are the real price to pay for free versions? Then it does not encourage me to give you a monthly subscription for the same product) I am tired of this. Fusion 360 could be a real great software (sincerely) if more attention was paid to the basic functions makers really need. I hope you will react promptly, for this problem has been continually reported for months now. Please read the forum !! By the way, I am glad to learn that the script does work on a PC, but the solution is not to buy a PC to replace a $2000 Mac when things turn bad. It should work fine on both standards.

The issue is still in place ... any update on this? It basically makes the spur gears method entirely useless ...

Apple Macbook Pro running OS Mojave.

Spur gear freezes at 77% and I have tried both the older version of Fusion 360 and the new UI version, same lock up.

I then set the "root" to 0 and it finally made the gear.

Try setting the root fillet to 0.

That worked for me.

I don't know why this forum post is marked resolved. Admitting it's a bug is not a resolution. This was reported almost a year ago and this is still a problem. It seems to work fine for some settings and stop at 77% for others. When it happens, it completely locks up the entire app and I have to force quit. This is not resolved.

Yes, it did work for me too when I finally set the root filet to 0. But this bug is still here.

Apparently Autodesk doesn't care at all...

I wasn't aware that people were having problems with the program until now.  However, I'm unable to reproduce the problem on my Mac.  I used the values specified in the first post and it successfully created the gear.  I've created several more using the same values and changing some values but it's always working.  Do any of you have a specific workflow and values that consistently fail?

Here are the settings I use. New document and first thing I go to is this Add-in.

I can change the root to zero and then it works. The script warns me it has to be under .012xxx as seen in other screenshot.

Then I also included screenshot of the result when 0 is used.
