Since April update : sometimes, some component disappear !

Hello,

I initially believed in an error on my part: after a long process, I noticed the disappearance of a component of my current design.

I thought I mistakenly deleted it before a save, so I just opened an old version of the history, then saved a copy of that missing component, and reinserted it into the design of the work in progress, then I removed the link to make it a new component so that I could work on it without modifying the original.

Phew, problem solved for me this time : component recovered and parameters reconfigured, all works.

Then the next day I reopened my design, and what was my surprise to find that the newly inserted component was still there, of course, but next to it was the one that had disappeared, and had come back on its own as if nothing was wrong!

Just a concern of points in a 3D sketch which were missing, the software using the cache to fill the gap (problem impossible to repair - I cannot find the solution but it is not important, the component will change at this level).

I then deleted the inserted duplicate component, and since then all seems to work fine in this design.

Have you experienced such an adventure?

Do you have any idea what may have happened?

nb: alas I cannot publish this project, but my question relates to the theory of the problem, not to the repair of my file in particular.

ps: it just did it again after a milestone recording, and I noticed that if the component has disappeared from the hierarchy, on the other hand itself and all its constituents are still in the timeline, but grayed out!

ps2: It's been several times that F360 crashes since April update, and in doing so it loses a component with all its history, even in timeline.

Fortunately we can recover the lost components via the old saved versions, but it's still worrying and annoying:

Do you have the same problem right now?

Any solution ?

Tx a lot for your reading and your time trying to resolve this serious issue.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting. I have some observations and questions.

Regarding crashes: I can only find two reports sent by you since the April update, and both are not in the latest build. Please send in all crash reports. One report is for a problem that is much older than the April update, and one is for a graphics problem. Neither of these crashes show any change in report rates after the April update. This means whatever you are experiencing for crashing is not related to April, at least from the two reports you sent.

Regarding the "disappearing component": In your example the component seemingly was missing, but later reappeared. This makes sense if what you describe represents the timeline in your model.

"I noticed that if the component has disappeared from the hierarchy, on the other hand itself and all its constituents are still in the timeline, but grayed out!"

Do you think your timeline was in what is referred to as "a rolled back" state?

Hello Phil,

First, thanks for your interest. I'll try my best to answer you.

Regarding crash reports : I have no idea why you do not find my last reports (so I say after April update done) : because yes, every time I have a crash problem within Fusion - and it shows me the Autodesk Windows to report it - I send a report. Every time.

Regarding the "disappearing component" : yes, as you say the time line seemed to be in a "rolled back" state when the issue I talk about appeared, BUT the marker was not visible at all.

In the meanwhile this did not appear again since my edited message here, so I cannot tell more about that to help you, but I hope someone will understand and repair this. Maybe it is already the case, and if it is, I wonder what happened.

Best Regards,
Guy

@CapGuy  I'm wondering if you have a design that can repeat the crashing? There appears to be a CV spline in a sketch that is causing trouble. If you can repeat the crashes you wrote about, could you help me by providing a design file or video? If you'd like to take this offline, we can work by email. It will help the development team debug this crash.

Thanks!

Alas @Phil.E , very sorry but I haven't enough time to try to repeat this for now.

I wrote this here hoping I was not alone and hoping this will help to trace automatically, but reading you I understand it is not possible and my sent crash-reports was not as useful as they should be...

Well, I promise you as soon as it reappears, I'll try to isolate and save the issue and I'll try to share it with you.

Cordially,
Guy

I don't know if your history marker disappearing is the same as I have been seeing, but I have had similar troubles. when it disappears I can still maneuver where it should be by right clicking on where I want the history marker to roll to. to get the marker to reappear I have to restart fusion. Ignore all the warnings in my time line they will be repaired later.

@josh.sapp : yes, something similar on my side... I haven't time left enough to trace and re-do, but I guess I'm not alone with this strange behavior. I hope these informations we provide will help to understand and debug, even if I know we are not so present as it could be more efficient... But hey, folks, we do what we can ! 😉

The timeline marker is known to disappear under very specific conditions. Try to avoid:

1. Opening the data panel: If the timeline marker is off screen when you open the data panel it will not be visible again until you close the data panel.

2. Resizing the application frame. If the timeline marker is off screen when the application frame changes size, such as going from maximized to a smaller size. Maximize Fusion when this happens.

3. Repeatedly pressing "move to end" timeline control. This is the play control that puts the timeline marker at the end, and also changes the view to see the end of the timeline. Try scrolling timeline view back and forth, or pressing the button again.

4. Dragging the marker*. When a sub-component is active, and the end of the timeline is off screen, and you drag the marker towards it, and bump into the right side of the screen.

(*this particular item should be fixed in the October 2020 update, please let us know if you continue to see it)

5. Timeline icon list not updated correctly when returning to a part after swapping between part tabs

  • Timeline view is reset to beginning of timeline, scroll bar is in same position as prior to switching tabs.
  • Remedy: move timeline scroll bar to see the marker, which is there, but it's off screen after switching tabs.

If you find a way to make it disappear other than these 5 actions, please let me know.

@Phil.E : thanks a lot for this.

Even it does not solve the component disappearing issue, it let me a useful advice about the usability of the timeline marker, and yes, you guessed it, I did some of the actions you describe.

On this topic about disappearing components : today a component disappeared again within my design.
Alas, always on a design I cannot post nor share, and I did not able to reproduce it : when I came back in the undo history it reappeared and this did not occurred anymore.

Hoping this help you a bit to more understand this issue,
Guy

When the component disappears, are you editing a feature?

Hello,

After a series of actions on another component (not linked nor in relation
of course), like for instance working on a sketch of this other component
then exit of the editing sketch, I see the component disappeared within the
tree.
The only mean to see this disappeared component back is to do the undo
functions many times until it is suddenly back.
nb: of course no link between the edited sketch and this component in my
example.

Hope this will help.

Guy

Can you please record a video using Autodesk Screencast? The words fail where video will succeed, seeing will help me understand your workflow.

Hello,

I too have encounter this issue, where you go into sketch mode and when you are done sketching and you go back into the scene. Suddenly a component is gone, and if you don't notice it quickly enough and don't do "ctrl+z" a few times it's gone.

You ask to record a video, it's not that simple, because it happens very rare and once it happens and you want to "undo" in re-appears and after that it stays again.

So to me this is a very worrying and dangerous issue that can cause quite some stress.

I've had it happen to me just now again myself, sadly I can't show a video of this, nor do I have a clue why that certain component would be removed...?
