Shared Fusion Projects Opening in Browser

For some students who've shared a project with me, I can open their files in desktop software. For others, although I see the shared project and associated files in the desktop, clicking on the file opens it as view only in the browser.  What is the difference in terms of the sharing permission they have given me?  What is the workflow for students to share projects so that I can open in the desktop?
