Selection tool sometimes not working as intended

I have an intermittent problem with the selection tool. Sometimes, I cannot start a selection on top of a body. In Screencast, it gets registered as a Drag Component event instead even though the box is unchecked in the selection menu (or there is no box). When that happens, the only way I can start a selection in the middle of an object is if I click a face first. Then from there I am able to click and drag to start selecting. But then if I release and press shift + click to add to the selection, the selection is cleared and Screencast records it as a "Drag component" event. Then after I restart Fusion 360, it starts working normally again, where a selection can be started on top of a body. It happens in Model, Patch and Sculpt, with the 3 types of selection tools and regardless of whether history is enabled or not. I am unable to reproduce it reliably. On one instance, which I recorded with NVIDIA Shadowplay, the selection was working fine, then I tabbed out to Firefox to do a Google search and when I came back to Fusion 360, it was not working right anymore. I attached the video. I have recorded several other instances of the selection tool not working. You should be able to find the Screencasts on my profile I think?

Screencast will be displayed here after you click Post.

Hi @Ceecis, I see that this is related to a question you raised here:  why-does-the-body-move-instead-of-faces-being-selected.  I will reply to this thread shortly, but wanted to tie the two together, rather than replying twice

Thanks for posting, @Ceecis.  The short answer is:  There is a conflict with the left mouse drag operation between any of the "mass selection" operations (window select, paint select, lasso select) and the component drag operation.  Over component geometry, we have to choose one of these behaviors.  Over open space, there is no conflict.

In Direct modeling, there is the "Component Drag" checkbox in the Selection dropdown that lets you choose which of these behaviors you want.  For reasons that I mostly don't remember, that checkbox is not present in a parametric design.

The one behavior of yours I was not able to reproduce is:  I think I saw in your video that, if the component is grounded, you were able to get paint select to work over geometry.  It shouldn't work, but I thought I saw that in your video.  Strange

Excellent explanation!

I personally only use paint-select in Sculpt mode, which is a direct modeling mode.

Thus I've never come across this behavior.

It seems that my Screencast did not post properly.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/2cb85cfd-c630-4777-b430-3ce1dedcd754

The very first thing that can be seen in this Screencast is that capture history is disabled, Component drag is disabled and I am still not able to use the select tool properly and Screencast still records the action as a component drag. After restarting Fusion, the issue is fixed, until it happens again for unknown reasons. So the behavior you show in your Screencast is not what is happening on my side.

Sorry, it was hard to tell what was going on in your screencast.  I have not been able to reproduce this behavior.  For me, if I am in a direct modeling design, and if Drag Component is turned off, I am able to paint select as I expect.
