"Object is read only" when I attempt to delete an object

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am attempting to delete a design that did not work out.  I am getting an error when I attempt to delete it that "the object is read only".  I don't see anywhere on the flyout menu or the menu bar to set or remove a read only flag.

I should note that the object is a merged combination of a sculpt form and a model form.

Where are you getting this error? Is it when deleting a design in the A360 Project Dashboard or in the Fusion 360 Data Panel?

Or are you trying to delete a feature in a design in the browser or the Timeline? Could you post a screenshot of this message?

Thanks,

I'm experiencing a simular issue.  I have a surface that says "Warning: some selected object is readonly and cannot be deleted."  when I try to delete it.  I had originaly deleteted the creation of it from the time line.  When selected, it doesn't show as being on the fly out or in the time line.  It also is not selectable for operations like "move" or "push pull"

This surface began life as a T-spline.  I'm wondering if it isn't related to that, since the OP was also working with a sculpt object.

It sounds like you were trying to do a hard delete using the timeline but some surfaces were left in the workspace canvas.

Could you share a public link of the design with me? Feel free to post here or e-mail it to Nathan.Chandler@Autodesk.com.

One thought may be to use the Compute All command from the Modify Drop down menu.

Another thought may be to roll the design back to a previous version and see if you can reproduce this issue by deleting in the same fashion. I would be highly interested in getting the file from you if you can.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Ok, I shared the file with you.  I tried the compute all Command.  Even if you roll the time line back to the beginnning the surface stays on the canvas.

Farrellw-I'm experiencing a similar issue. Did your issue ever get resolved? I'm still waiting on a reply.  I think there is a bug in the works.  Someone else just posted with a similar question here-

Nathan-

I just shared another file with you.

The same behaviour is happening again.  I have a tspline body that can't be deleted.  This is getting to be a serious problem!  This problem apparently creeped in many versions back, and I will lose a lot of progress just to get back to a point where this surface isn't there.

A few observations about the file-

-The tspline on the lower half of the model is the one in question.

-it does not appear as a body in the browser

-it can not be deleted.

-if the tspine operation can be deleted from timeline, but the body stays in the workspace.

-opacity can not be controlled at the component level, but can when adjusting opacity for the entire model.

-interestingly, if I go to DM mode, the surface disappears.

I have tried to recreate this, but can't figure out what is causing it.

and despite not being able to delete it from the work space, you can still edit the tspline with edit form.  weird

I just checked my junk folder and I didn't see anything from you. Did you e-mail it to nathan.chandler@autodesk.com?

Thanks,

Yes, but I shrared it through A360, so the email would have come from autodesk, not me.  In any case, here is a link to the last file I reference above-

Thanks for sharing! This is odd behavoir, certainly! I note that if I create a new form, I can delete the "orphaned" sculpt body. Once that is done, you can finish the form and then hard delete it from the Form feature in the timeline. See the below screencast for reference.

This is a work-around solution for some abnormal behavior.

One thing I note is that if you do a compute all from the modify drop down menu, there are a few warnings in the timeline. You may want to look at any feature highlighted in the timeline and try to fix those features. It's a best practice to do this.

Do you have any tips on how I may be able to reproduce this issue from scratch? I will submit this to development for further review; however, it would be really nice to know how to reproduce this.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Thanks.  Being able to delete the surface at least lets me keep moving forward.

So far I have not been able to replicate this on purpose, but it has happened several times.  The things in common in each case where: Using T-spines, splitting surfaces created with a tspline with a line or surface, Rolling timeline marker back and forth to fix/tweak things.  using multiple components

Below is a screen cast of me deleting a surface (using your steps outlined above) in an earlier version where the same thing had happened.  Note that the surface could not be deleted when the component I had originally created the surface in was active.  It could only be deleted when the full assembly was active.

I just ran into a similar issue also. While working on a design I tried to save and it did not allow me, plus I noticed it said "read only" at the top of the screen. I saved a copy so I did not lose my work, closed the original then reopened it. After reopening "read only" at the top of the screen goes away and I was able to edit it and save.

I don't know if this is useful or not but I got the Read Only error message and after messing around for ages trying to find a fix I realised I was still in Sculpt mode. When I swapped back to model mode I could delete the Read Only objects.

I fixed my problem with this issue by turning it into a mesh and then deleting it
