Probing goes too far in the Z direction when probing X and Y

I have a workpiece that is approximately .375 thick. I need to do in process probing for X and Y, but the probe goes so far in the Z direction that it collides with my vise and causes an error. I want to reduce the amount of Z direction that the probe travels before it probes for X and Y.  FYI, I can pick any point along the X or Y plane, but there is no setting to pick the depth or Z depth on the X or Y plane. Anyone have a solution or work around? Thanks.
