Path pattern 4 compute failed

Hi there , I am trying  create a  line of rivets to follow  around  the outline  of  a  roughly squared off claw hammer head,I have created my rivet head already , I click on pattern - on path, select features (rivet head) select path  ( hammerhead outline) click on pattern direction , then drag the blue arrow around  the outline, click on the number of rivets ,which show on the  sketch & then click OK but get error message  Path Pattern 4 compute failed . 

What do you suggest? TIA

Further details- when I click on  the compute option , I get message  invalid input setting .

Hi folks, I have resolved the problem- when selecting  features ,I was only selecting 1 of the elements , instead of all,

so I now have my row of rivets
