Object snap not working

Hi I'm relatively new to Fusion 360 and am unable to perform simple sketch geometry operations using object snap.
I've searched the forums and found several related threads, but none fix what seems to be a really fundamental issue I'm having.
Lets say start a new file and create some simple sketch geometry like a randomly placed rectangle a circle and a vertical line.
I then want to do a 'point-to-point' move of the circle and the rectangle.
Move origin point is the middle of the top edge of the rectangle.
Move target point is one end of the line.
So I select the circle and rectangle geometry, enter the move command, and choose 'point to point'.
I now have no way at all of choosing anything other than line endpoints or the circle centrepoint as the move origin. Hovering near midpoints etc doesn't work. There is no object snap type list in the sketch pallete.
'Object snap' and 'show constraints' are switched on in the sketch pallete.
I've tried 'reset default layout' as suggested in some threads which didn't work.
Other threads on the same topic point to the drop-down list in the constraints tab, but this doesn't work either.
If I try to use 'midpoint' from the constraints tab at the top it just exits the move command and lets me pick a single sketch object like one edge of the rectangle, and align it's midpoint with the midpoint of another geometry object.
In desperation I've even tried the old 'switch it of and switch it back on again'.
Am I missing something really obvious here?
