Mac Trackpad Zoom/Pan Bug

Hello everyone, I recently downloaded the latest version of Fusion 360 (2.0.2455) on my Mac and I keep running into this bug where the scrolling motion of the two fingers will zoom in/out rather than pan. It's like the panning command was somehow assigned to the zooming command, and the original zooming command was of no use. In addition to this, orbiting is completely dysfunctional.

My MacBookPro has the following specs:

Version: 10.10.3

MacBookPro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

Processor: 2.9GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8GB 1867 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk: Macintosh HD

Graphics: Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536MB

Storage: 500GB

I have read a thread discussing the exact same problems, however it was started on 2014 and the answers provided back then do not work for me now. These answers include:

Toggling on/off the "Use gesture-based view navigation"

Minimizing the Fusion 360 app and maximizing it

I hope we can solve this issue soon because it really makes it a major pain in the back to work like this for people in my situation.

Thank you

@Anonymous Thanks for the clarification.

So after you open your computer and try to use Fusion, is this problem 100% reproducible?

Have you tried minimizing Fusion 360, or any other applications, and then close your computer? What happens then?

Can you ever get the trackpad to work correctly? Some customers say they minimize Fusion or click into the workspace, or on toolbars and that returns focus for the trackpad to be on the Fusion 360 app.

The reason I ask all of this is to find a way to reproduce the effect. If we can reproduce it on a debug machine, we can find the code that needs fixing. FYI, there are many dozens of us on the Fusion development team using and testing MacBook Pro machines who cannot reproduce it. Also, not all customers with a machine like yours see the problem. Clearly there is something that we are not doing that would reproduce it.

Thanks for your help!

@Phil.EI very seldom restart my Mac (current uptime is 57 days). I usually have Chrome running, but on a different Space than Fusion (I use 10 virtual desktops). I'm happy to help debug in whatever way I can; it's very consistent on my laptop.

An interesting wrinkle I've discovered is that this happens only with the trackpad: I just hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse at work and while the trackpad exhibits the problem, the mouse works properly.

Thanks for reporting. Just curious, do you have any idea why or when it happens, in relation to anything you are doing on your computer? (such as switching apps)

I ask because we are still at a loss as to how to reproduce this and fix it. Some customers report it coming and going, which sort of indicates it's a local condition on your machine, or a workflow you use, or the presence of other running apps, or all of the above. We'd love to fix it if we knew a little more about it.

Thanks in advance for any information you can give.

It only happens when the laptop sleeps. I think it's when I have another
app open and active. If there's a debug build I can install I'm happy to
help in that way.

Hello, I have a end 2016 Macbook Pro 15" with touchbar and have the same issue sporadically. Even when restarting Fusion the problem persists. I use no accessories.

I have to take that back. Bug still exists. Unclear to me when it happens and when not, restarting fusion always solves it.

Since the problem persists with the latest version (at the moment 2.0.4279) and recommended settings, I'm giving a try to this 5 stars rated plugin: Native Trackpad

As the developer claims: "This add-in fixes two finger pan and pinch to zoom gestures where gestures are not being recognized or where they are slow. On top of that it adds inertia to two finger pan. This is done by replacing Fusion's gesture recognizer with macOS native recognizer."

I've installed it and at the moment it seems to work, but minor issues (e.g. to scroll data panel and timeline with gestures you have to keep CMD key pressed).

I can't believe that a little plugin FINALLY made my trackpad behave as I expect. Finally, zooming is smooth, which always just reacted very late and I had to pinch in and out constantly to make it zoom in. Really feels usable now.

Wow.

Autodesk you guys have to take a look it this and see if you can't do this better (without pressing cmd for scrolling in the menus).

I'm still having the same bug. I'm running OS X 10.13.2 on a 2016 15" MBP. Fusion 360 2.0.4343

I'm unable to recreate the bug in a reasonable amount of time--if I start Fusio, make a document and then put the mac to sleep via the system menu or by closing the lid, then wake it up, everything works as it is supposed to.

If I close my laptop and re-open it the next day, I tend to get the loss of orbiting on the trackpad. There's some amount of time that has to pass, but I'm unable to determine what that duration is.

Seems to make no difference if chrome is open or not; plugged in or on battery. I've tried setting the screensaver to different values since that's the only time-based setting I could think of that could conflict somehow.

Stumped!

@lukerl

Thanks for the detailed steps and feedback. From what I can see, something is actually crashing the gestures that Fusion is using while the computer sleeps. Why this happens after some extended time (and not immediately) is what we need to figure out.

I've changed to use native trackpad plugin for some time. I'm satisfied, most of the gestures survives after sleep (long duration or short duration), only the "shift+two finger rotation" sometimes fails.

In general, it's a very feasible workaround.

Best,

XJ

No, not at this time. It remains impossible to reproduce on our debug machines. Have you tried the native track pad add-in?

Are you only seeing this when you have put your machine to sleep while Fusion is still running?

Thanks,

This is pretty disheartening that the issue has been going on for 4 years and people are still having issues... I am also experiencing this issue.

I plug my Mac computer into a docking station and use a magic track pad at work. When I get home I use my trackpad built into my Mac. At work with my external track pad, everything works. When I get home, my built in trackpad only zooms in and out...
