Loft not following rails how I'm intending

I'm trying to make a loft that wraps around the edges of a body as it progresses:

I made rails that perfectly follow the curve of the body, but the loft surface still ends up clipping through it a bit. What am I getting wrong?

You are only having control over the shape of the loft where you have rails, but that isn't enough.

You should loft this with individual surfaces:
