Is there a way to lock the sketch view to the current view

I'm in the process of re-engineering a part from an STL file, and when I enter the shetch environment, quite frequently the view shifts away from the sketch objects AND rotates the view by 90°, 180° or 270° seemilgly at random.

Is there any way to lock the view to the cartesian coordinate system, ie +ve X increasing to the right, and +ve Y Increasing vertically?
