Insert into Current Design

I have been trying to get the Insert into Current Design feature to work all day, but it does nothing. I have read and reread posts about this and followed the steps, but I still cannot get it to work.

Why is it so hard to get something this simple done?

I'm trying to add 3D objects into my project that are standard across my designs. They are IGES files, and I can upload them with no problem. I can also open them individually, no problem, but I cannot move one design into another; why?

Fusion 360 seems very powerful, but some things that should be super simple are extremely hard to accomplish especially compared to similar systems.

It is probably just my lack of experience but things seem less intuitive. Maybe I need to go to AU!

Hi @handshaper

Have you tried to create a blank design, save it and then import the IGES files?

Yes, I have tried this numerous times and cannot get it to work. I have been unable to get anything to be inserted into the current design. Extremely frustrating.

I have tried both of these approaches, but they will not insert anything into the current design. Drag and drop does not work, nor does the "Insert into Current Design" menu command.

Hi @handshaper

If you are able to open the IGES files individually, but unable to insert them into your current design, it is possible that the issue is related to the file format. Make sure that the files are in a format that Fusion 360 can read and that they are not corrupted.

Additionally, ensure that you have the correct permissions to access the files and that they are not open in any other program while trying to insert into your current design.

It is also possible that your issue is related to the version of Fusion 360 you are using, so try to check for updates and make sure you are using the latest version.

@handshaper

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Also Attach the file you want to insert.

Have you converted the IGES to solid bodies? Do they pass quality check?

I can open the files I'm trying to import without any problems. I can work with them and make changes, so they appear to be sound. I have even tried saving them as Fusion files and then tried to insert those files into the current design with no luck.

So I'm baffled, seems like this should be super easy, but I guess not.

@handshaper
It is super easy - simply Attach your files here and end all doubt.

OK, I have added the two files I have been working with since the last attempt. I converted the one file to a STEP file to see if that made any difference. it didn't.

The FIN BASES 2023 v5.f3d is the file into which I'm trying to insert the FUTURES-Shallow-Base-23-v1.step file.

I had no trouble with drag and drop.

Can you create a video of your process?

Where did you drag and drop from, the browser sidebar or from the computer?

Open file 1 and save.

Open file 2 and save.

Make file 1 active.

From the data panel drag and drop file 2 into file 1.

Save.

Does not work for me. Could the problem be that I'm using the trial version, which somehow does not do everything? I'm going through these exercises in order to evaluate if I want to move to Fusion 360 from my current CAD systems.

Also, I'm doing this on a Mac. I'm not a big fan of these Neutron based apps.

Trial version should be fully functional.

Can you create video of your steps?

Not sure how a video would help, as I followed the exact steps you mentioned. Although when I did those steps I was never given the option to save the files that had been opened as the SAVE command was disabled.

I only had to Save as I first opened the files.

On your machine unless you made some change Save will be grayed out as the files are up to date.

But that makes me wonder what would happen if you created a new sketch (can be blank) in each file such that now they would not be up to date and Save would be enabled.  Grasping at straws now as you haven’t provided a video.

I don't have the means to make a video. Plus, I have just had to uninstall and reinstall the app as I could not get it to run. That took most of the day, yikes!

I did try the suggestion to create a sketch (blank) and then was able to save it. did that to both of the involved files, but it made no difference. I could still not drag one file into the other, nor could I use the Insert to Current File option.

So I have reached the end of my tether with trying to make this work. I have other things to do.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help.

I'm on an M1 Mac running Monterey with version 2.0.16490 x86_64 [Rosetta 2]

I'm seeing a similar issue and cannot insert. You are not alone.

Basic use of the Insert into Current Drawing fails to display the object and the subsequent UI to move the inserted object.

Attempting to drag and drop the object also fails - nothing happens.

Screen recording illustrates the problem. Nothing like the working tutorials.
