How to drive joints in Animation?

I have been surprised and somewhat frustrated that you can't drive joints in your meticulously designed piece while in Animation mode.

I've stumbled on this post from seven years ago and it looks we won't be blessed with this *cough* obvious *cough* feature anytime soon. Or will we?

Alternatively, is there a paid module or plugin that would allow this?
