Hi,

I need to create an external rib on this clip as show below. Could anyone advise me on how to go about this?

Hi @l.fixter

Welcome to the Fusion 360 online community - thanks for posting!

There are many ways that you could create this geometry - I personally think that an extruded feature will be the easiest to work with. I have shown how I would go about creating this rib feature in the screencast below.

Hopefully this helps! Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

While it might not make much of a difference in this particular case, there is a rib tool available that also functions well for cases such as this:

Thanks Paul, very helpful! would you use this same method to create outer "ribs" for a formed (cavity/core die pressing) metal piece? I will give your method a try - and then attach an image if it works.

…and if it doesn’t work, will you Attach your *.f3d file (or dummy if proprietary) to get advice from the experts here?

I've attached a crude image of an outer rib. This was not done with a Sheet metal part. Is there a best practice for adding strengthening features to bends of sheet metal components - on the outside of the turn?

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Thanks for the quick reply! As you can probably tell, I'm new to Fusion 360. Here is the attached model.

Also, here is an actual image of the physical component that I am trying to model to help you understand the goal!

Sketch7 in BasicCrampon has two dimensions that are not measurable in the real world.

I would expect some sort of pattern with the 3 "teeth", but not sure of your Design Intent.

Move is almost always the wrong move (pun intended) as used by beginners.  We will likely have to start over from scratch using the BORN Technique.

With the BORN Technique it is seldom necessary to create any Workplanes...

Sketch9 is not fully defined.  Blue lines and white dots should keep you awake at night.

Experienced users seldom use Primitives, but let me continue on to see where you go with this...

Sketch11  and 12, 13, 18 are not fully defined?

Rib1 does not make logical sense to me?

Component2 > Sketch2 could be simplified with two lines and Thin Feature Extrusion.

Component2 > Sketch3 not fully defined?

Are you ready to start over from scratch?

Set your part down on table.

Take photo from Front, Top, RSide, LSide, Back and Bottom.

Embed the photos in next reply

(Try to take parallel to the views as much as possible reducing parallax error.)

I should probably have deleted that component before sending it to you - but at least it helps you see where I am at in my Fusion 360 development (downloaded it yesterday).

Rathan that focusing on the component that I provided (and should have deleted first) - do you have advice on how to create a rib on the outside of a bend?

I am effectively trying to design a component for metal die stamping / metal forming. The corners in my model will need to be reinforced.

Sorry for the messy component - I should have deleted that one before attaching it here...

If you read >this thread<  starting with Message #24 you will see that I have a very rigid step-by-step procedure that is not for everyone.

For me to proceed, first I would need 6 images of part as specified in previous response.

I didn’t see that request for photos. Here you are! I’ll check out that thread, too.

Examine this quick and dirty mock-up of where I think you want to go.

If you start over and create a better start - the experts here will walk you to a solution step-by-step.

The attached file should give you some ideas.

Where did you go?
I thought you were ready and excited after reading the link to another discussion thread.
I figured out a better/easier technique, but this sort of iterative design method assumes active discussion.

Sorry about the delay - I am, but I got caught up in some non-hobby work. I will send you a private message to exchange contact info and arrange to meet!

Thanks very much for that file! I will take a look today - and try to apply some of the dimensions and see how it goes! Also very excited to work my way through the timeline to watch how you created that!
