How do I set a custom drawing template as the default across all projects?

I have a custom drawing template, it's the only one we are to use in our organisation.

I want fusion to automatically load this template when I create a new drawing through any method, e.g. when I select drawing -> from design, it needs to automatically be the default menu option under "template" and if I go into any project and right click on any design in the list on the left and select "new drawing from design" I want it to load that template up.

At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a way of doing this, which to me is telling me the software is fundamentally broken (again).

hi @Ollie_Norris

Here's a video I put together for a very similar question.

Once set up, the last used drawing template should be selected by default.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply.

I can see that this will kind of help finding the correct template by going through the top menu selecting Drawing -> from design.

What I can't get my head round is that in the entirety of the fusion development team they've never once thought that organisations would want to only use their own drawing templates and give them the option to do so?

In 15 years of engineering I can honestly say that at least 90% of drawings I've encountered use a custom template.  While I understand there is a workaround to use custom templates, it's far from integrated into the software.

Why is there not simply an option in some settings page somewhere "default drawing template: "?? seems so blindingly obvious.

Am I correct in saying that if I want to use a custom template then right clicking a design and selecting "new drawing from design" is an option no longer available to me, since this will just create a new drawing a standard fusion360 drawing template?  The only way of accessing a custom template is through the one menu and then I have to rely on it being the last used?  And if it isn't I will have to manually browse to it?

Hi @Ollie_Norris

I understand your frustration. The team has been working hard to bring improvements to templates and title blocks, and we're not done. In fact, if you have a look at the public roadmap, you'll see that were are looking at bringing further improvements to templates and title blocks.

You are right, currently, right-clicking on a design and selecting "New Drawing from Design" will create a drawing based on the default Fusion 360 template.

But, with the model open, you have 2 options to get to your custom template:

1) Right-click on a component in the browser and select "Create Drawing"

2021-02-24_14h02_31.png

2) Click on the "File" icon then choose "New Drawing" > "From Design"

Both of these options will present you with this dialogue:

The selection will default to your last-used custom template, there is a drop-down that will let you swap this for any of your other custom templates (I have a few for different sizes). The browse option is there to let you browse to templates in other projects.

I hope you find this helpful

Am I missing it, or do we still not have a solution 3 years later???

I don't want to use the workaround, as I like to right click on particular components to create drawing, so they are autoselected when I create a drawing. It saves an extra step and is more intuitive.

What I don't understand is why in the preferences under General > Drawing there is not a dropdown for default template still after 3 years!
