Groove turning roughing leaves too much material for finishing

I'm using the Lathe 'Turning Groove' operation, but the Roughing portion is leaving too much material for the final cut. How can I change the amount of stock the Roughing operation leaves? Surely there must be somewhere you can enter this value?

Am I missing something?

Hi Roger, if you edit the toolpath, the fourth tab over should be the 'stock to leave' settings:

Doesn't that mean the stock to leave for the whole operation? I've got that turned off, and the documentation states that the default is supposed to be zero.

Yes that would be for the roughing operation. We really would need to see an example of what it's doing to know more.

I'm afraid I don't undestand your reply.

The grooving operation has a Stock to leave button which is associated with the whole process, regardless of whether you have a Roughing pass or not.

My question is this. If I do use a Roughing pass, why does that part of the pass not appear to have any control over how much material it leaves before doing the finishing part of the operation? It seems to be some calculated value, and that's too much for what I need.

I'm saying we need to see it in a file or a screenshot or something. I do not get any stock to leave on any operation if i uncheck it - the only exception being if the selected tool can or cannot enter the groove.

I'm not talking about the amount of stock on the completely finished operation. I'm talking about the amount left by the Roughing operation within the operation before it finishes it to the zero stock size.

I've attached a screen shot showing what I'm getting. The Z-axis is up and down the screen, the X-axis is left to right. You can see that there are three plunges right to left which are the Roughing cuts, and the don't go close enough to the finished size. I need to know where the control is to be able to change that. I need to do this because the tool can't cope with a large side load, and the part is very slender.

That is odd, can you share this file? I'm not seeing anything like this on any quick sample i've done.

I could if I knew how to do that. I'm new to Fusion360 and find the filing system baffling. I have no idea where my files are stored or how to arrange them. They could be on the cloud, on my PC or anywhere for all I know.

No worries, make sure the file is saved, then go to File>Share>Public link, enable the link and copy paste it here. If you need visuals this should help:

Here's the link to that.

Out of interest, this is the job I'm running...

I've developed a process whereby I can create an output that effectively converts my CNC Mill to a CNC Lathe. I've modified the HAAS Turning post processor to create a path suitable for Mach4. That has to include the Y-axis as well. I've written a simple program that merges offsets for the tooling positions that are looked up in a text file, one X/Y/Z offset for each tool.

Sweet, you'll need to enable 'allow downloads' for me to open it in Fusion. You can set a password and PM that too me if need be.

Fusion360 is telling me that I need a subscription to be allow the item to be download.

I've attached a screenshot of the parameters I'm using on one of the cuts which shows the problem. I expect you can replicate the problem if you just create a simple cylinder with this operation.

I'm having the same issue and have been driving myself nuts all day trying to find a solution. I see this thread is a few years old and wondering if there is a resolution to this problem?

Cheers
