Fusion 360 now freezing and crashing every time

Sadly my problems have not gone away. If anything they have got worse. I can launch Fusion 360, log in OK and see my content in the browser. However, almost anything I click on cause the browser pane to turn black and the mouse pointer to turn to a blue spinning circle. I cannot do any design work any more

I can close the window with the x in the top right corner and I see a pop-up box that Windows has stopped responding.

I have tried:

  • archiving all my content in the MyHub browser
  • reinstalling the software using the Fusion 360 cleaner
  • booting into Safe Mode
  • updating my NVidia drivers
  • disconnecting the USB port replicator and the second monitor
  • disconnecting my SpaceMouse
  • reinstalling Windows 10

I have searched the forum for similar problems and not found exactly the same behaviour.

In the video the problem starts when you click Select Files. Fusion is doing something very specific at that point, or at least it should be. When Select Files starts, Fusion needs  things from Windows, like a file explorer window to show up.

In the beginning of the video, you are browsing into folders with ease. Is there any other way you can trigger this aside from "Select Files"?

For instance: Do you get the same result when clicking something else, completely unrelated to the data panel. Such as start a sketch?

There are a few more things you can try:

1. First: Update the 3Dconnexion drivers.

https://www.3dconnexion.com/service/drivers.html

2. Start Fusion, and put it into offline mode. (click the clock icon to find the controls for that)

Does the problem happen after either of these steps?

Yes. Almost any action, including starting a sketch or adding a cube has the same result.

BTW, I made the mistake of appending this post to the end of my previous message but then realised that this would probably be treated as already solved, hence reposting here as a new issue. But the zipped log files are already uploaded there. Here is a link for convenience: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-support/fusion-360-has-suddenly-started-freezing/m-p/94812...

Hi

Thanks for your prompt responses. I have tried both but getting the same error each time. The screen cast of going into offline mode is attached. Updating the 3D Connexion drivers was a good suggestion as they were a little behind, but unfortunately didn't solve the problem.

Regards,

Richard

What am I missing?  Can anyone help me to get Fusion working again?

Do the log files reveal anything useful?

Thanks for reading.

Nothing bad in the logs. The problem is not with the network or cloud, it's on your machine.

Please try these things:

1. Open Fusion, go to Preferences > Analytics. Turn off all analytics.

2. Go to Tools tab, Addins. Turn off all addins, especially any that you installed. The default addins are not suspect.

Let me know if that helps.

If it gets stuck again, can you make a dump file? This would have clues.

1. Open task manager

2. Right click on the Fusion process

3. Pick Create dump file

(this is an example of what that looks like, but do this for Fusion, not chrome)

Hi Phil

1. Analytics were all turned off already - I think I must have read that on another forum post.

2. I don't have any add-ins installed.

3. It did get stuck again so I have created a Fusion dump file which is 2 Gb in size.

Ready for the next step.

Cheers,

Richard

I decided to try downloading WinDbg Preview to inspect the dump file.

I have attached the report that it generated.

I searched on my disk for the DLLs that were identified in the memory dump (OGSGraphics.dll and tbb.dll were a couple, from memory) and then tried clearing out the copies. So far I have uninstalled and unplugged the 3D Connexion drivers for the Space Mouse and uninstalled Project Memento and Project Miller.
A fresh installation of Fusion 360 still locks up as soon as I try and do anything involving files or graphics. This is maddening because it has been working fine on this machine for years and I honestly can’t work out what has changed to prevent it from running.

Try this:

Open Preferences > Graphics Driver > Change to DX9.

And if you haven't yet, turn off all graphics effects.

All effects off already. I have tried to select DX9 several times but when I click Apply it freezes and on restarting the program the setting has reverted to Automatic.

I have continued to research the clues provided in the memory dump and am beginning to suspect that something has corrupted the registry.

I'm going to begin the process of back up the registry, setting restore points and then attempting a registry repair.

Hi, was scrolling thru this forum and saw ur thread.  For what it’s worth, ur not the only one having this type of problem.  I’ve had F360 on my PC for a yr now, think I tried contacting support for help a long while back.  I hardly ever try to use it anymore b/c of the similar problems ur mentioning.  As soon as I open F360, it loads the main screen.  I try to open any file and there it goes... left side menu goes black and the cursor starts spinning...after a few minutes I’ll try to do anything, draw something/etc....may get a couple minutes relief but it’ll always freeze up over and over.  Then I try to exist F360 and it always says “Fusion 360 Not Responding...”. The only difference is this happens to me 95% of the time when I’m OFFLINE, I live in a rural area, no reliable internet available where I live, so I take my PC to work maybe once a wk to maintain Offline usage (b/c ya gotta check in every 2 wks I believe).  When connected to the internet it works a little better, yet it still freezes often.  Honestly I’ve given up on the program.  I had high hopes for it in the beginning, but this never stops.  No update fixes it or reinstalling F360/etc/etc.  I just downloaded the new Autodesk desktop app (That’s included with the latest update) and discovered it won’t let me log-in (No internet connection...), funny thing is, I’m certain I had it set to Offline Mode.  So I can’t do a thing with it.  It’s a shame too, it could be a great app if it could perform worth a flip.  Even when watching the online Webinars, ya can see those guys having the left menu go blacking out quite often or it freezes up momentarily.   Sorry to vent here, just seems ur having similar problems. I hope no one gets mad at my reply but it’s very frustrating.  Hope they get urs straightened out.

Thanks for posting. I hate to think I will have to abandon Fusion360 as I've really grown to like using it.

I have tried my best today and at one point I almost thought I had the answer. I tried reinstalling the NVidia drivers again and discovered I was using the Game-Ready version but there was an alternative, more stable version for productivity users. I tried again with my fingers crossed, but no luck.

All of my attempts at registry cleaning, running system chkdsk, uninstalling possibly conflicting software has made no difference at all. I will post one more memory dump report in the hope that it might contain something useful.

I feel ya pain, man.  And I tried the same thing with the Nvidia Drivers, there’s a game version, and a studio version, which is supposedly more suitable for CAD stuff.  But it didn’t help me either.  After getting started with F360 about a yr ago, it didn’t take long for me to see it was really lacking some important features...the 3D sketching was awful.  Having to determine the correct plane orientation to 3D sketch a curve, very frustrating.   I stopped using it mainly for that reason alone.  When it was finally updated with an appropriate 3D sketching  facility, I was like, “finally...” But it still has the same problem ur going through, constant freezing/etc.  I gotta Gigabyte Aero-15G with NVidia 1070, this shouldn’t be happening.  Anyways, maybe eventually they’ll get ya straightened out.  Best of luck.

Hi,

Is this a dual graphics system (onboard and video card)?

If not sure, use Device Manager to check and if so, have you tried disabling the onboard (usually Intel) subsystem?

Hi Kevin

i believe the onboard graphics are disabled in the firmware. I can only see the NVIDIA card and the USB port replicator. And no, unplugging the port replicator doesn't fix it either.

FWIW, this setup has served me well for years.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi,

Can you use Notepad to open the file GraphicsCardInfo.xml. This is located in:

C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\{GUID Folder}

You want to change the line:

<API>DirectX 11.000000</API>

to

<API>DirectX 9.000000</API>

Then save the file (without the txt extension).

Launch Fusion and check the behavior.

Thanks, Kevin.

I made the changes exactly as directed but on launching Fusion the crashing behaviour has not changed.

Cheers,

Richard
