Fusion 360 - how to increase performance

Hi,

Maybe an old question.. but my design is growing and right now fusion is very slow. I'm waiting for the software... and in my opinion software should wait for me:)

What can I do?

1. With design? Maybe there are some tricks?

2. Is Phenom X6 to slow? If I buy I7 7700k will this help? (Right now my processor is utilisied in about 70 % when running fusion.)

3. 12 Gb memory? More memory will help?

4. gtx 1060 3Gb is to slow? What card should I use to get it work better?

My design:

http://a360.co/2poxRnE

If I select all components in "Listwa T50B v1" then the software slows down.. Actually even saving takes too long time.

Maybe fusion is not best for very complex design? Will Inventor perform better?

Best regards,

Krzysztof

Hi,

The best trick to do is to turn-off the History capture, and that can decrease the pressure big time but be careful when working and review your process because you won't be able to go back or edit what you finished except by ctrl z 🙂

I would not turn off history.

First limit graphics effects, under the ?help menu, in graphics diagnostic. Next make the things you aren't working with unselectable or invisible. RMB on the component to make it unselectable.

Apologies for any typos, on an airport iPad. When I get to a decent wifi I'll post better info for performance, without turning off history.

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm sorry it's taken a while to get back to you.

Looking at your file I can see it's not too big for Fusion. The ways to improve performance that I already mentioned, did those help?

Please find attached a paper from an Autodesk University class on Large Models. It covers some basic theory and practice for managing models this size. It's a couple years old so some of the UI and workflows may have changed a little but the principles are the same.

Let me know how it goes for you, I hope we can improve your experience.

Thank you. This file looks interesting. I will look into it.

BTW. I just changed my computer to I7-7700k, 32gb ram, gtx 1060 6gb and super fast 256gb ssd and there is no difference in speed at all.

My previouse machine was phenom x6 1055T with 8gb ram, gtx 1060 3gb and 256 standard ssd.

Fusion is just slow... this is fact now..

The slowiness is especially visible when I try to select many objects using area selection (by mouse). I just need to wait 20 - 30 seconds and the processor speed is full 4,5ghz (1 core only).

Your model has many components. (1400+) Not too much for Fusion, but some workflows may be affected, and you will need to take measures to help your performance.

One of your components is causing most of the trouble. This one has 1352 out of 1444 components:

1352_of_1444_components.png

You will see that if you turn off the visibility of this object window selections greatly improve. If you read the paper attached, you will find advice such as making this unselectable when you don't need to select it, or just invisible when it is not needed.

Turning off visual effects will also help greatly. This is done from the Graphics Diagnostic tool under ?Help.

Another problem is the nature of the Select tool. By default the filter is wide open. So with default filtering, a window selection of your model returns tens of thousands of faces, edges, etc. Do you really need to select all of that at once? Using the Select filtering you'll find that narrowing down the list to only one kind of object, such as body or component will speed up the window selections.

Most importantly, I need to understand what you are trying to achieve. Can you describe your workflow when you need to window select so many objects? What is the objective?

Once again, sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks,

Hi I know this thread is not that recent but I had similar problems (new graphics card on the way)

I was advised on another thread about same problem.

Was given similar advice and found some improvement particularly when it comes to selection settings and how you go about selecting - as you have stated

I found using the long left click and using the selection list and using the move command helped greatly.

As you said fusion otherwise has to figure out what to choose - using this method seems to relieve fusion of a lot of burden

I am still getting some lag though.

What would be welcome is if when trying to select something without using the long click is that if fusion would prompt you to make a selection if it is struggling  to pick what you want.( I use NX at work and it does that}

As for what to run Fusion on I would suggest looking up TFI Cad Tips on you tube and digging through his videos about ryzen 5 system using integrated graphics (not a recommendation for a professional workstation) to give an idea of what performance can be had in fusion.

He is not that keen on AMD normally but was impressed by the ryzen 5 processor.

Any way hope my typo fest helps a little bit. (written on android ta let and not using the keyboard)

Cheers

Richard

I was too slow today because there were many Fusion 360 parts.
So, during setup, we pushed back the automatic save time to 120 minutes.
At first it was supposed to be five minutes, but every five minutes it was unresponsive.
However, there is an inconvenience of saving whenever necessary during work.
