While working with a fusion360 file, the program stalls for a moment and then I notice that another project file has been added into the currently working file. Is this a feature, or a curse.

That sounds impossible without your intervention. It would require you to drag items from the data panel into your current design. Are you dragging the tiles from the data panel into the design window?

There are a few other ways you could intentionally insert items, perhaps you are accidentally doing that? The methods all require you to select, browse, open, etc. separate files. A lot of interaction would be required.

When this first started happening, I too thought that I might be accidentally dragging from the open data panel. In fact, I'm sure that I did just that multiple times so  I stopped leaving the data panel  open. And it still happens maybe twice a month or so. When I realized that some of the objects had been deleted for months, I started to wonder how else it could happen.  Most of the time these objects just seem to appear in my design without any notification of the event. Once I had 5 different drawings just show up in the one I was working on.  In that case, I had collapsed the object tree and when I reopened it, It was much bigger then just before. Now that's just weird.

As a programmer, I often write build small bits of code to shortcut features for testing purposes.  I wonder if I'm stumbling onto something of that nature.

At any rate, I can easily just delete the additions, but obviously would like to figure it out.

I'm assuming when you say drawings you mean 3D solid model parts, and in the context of a design those are called components. Their constituent solid body shapes are called bodies. (drawing is a word reserved for 2D drafting - blue prints)

As a programmer, you know nothing is random in software. In order for components to appear in your drawing there is a deterministic path for that to happen.

This has to happen for a reason:

"Most of the time these objects just seem to appear in my design without any notification of the event. Once I had 5 different drawings just show up in the one I was working on."

So here's how we figure this out:

  1. When you see it happen, Undo until they are gone.
  2. Open a screen capture software such as Autodesk Screencast, record the entire Fusion window.
  3. Use Redo until the components appear again.
  4. Post the video here, or send to me a link in a PM. We can work that out once you capture the evidence.

I recorded the undo actions as mentioned. there were no notification or messages related to its insertion.  It just appeared.

I added your name to the screencast for viewing.

here is the screen cast.  this project just showed up no interaction at all.

Not seeing your screencast. I added a video showing how to put screencast videos into forum posts.
