Feature Request – Create Bounding Box in Design Workspace like in Manufacture Workspace

Hi Autodesk team,

I’d like to suggest a feature for Fusion 360 that would significantly improve the workflow in the Design workspace.

Currently, the Manufacture workspace allows you to easily create a bounding box by selecting a body or component, and the system automatically generates a bounding box based on its geometry. Additionally, you can define the box orientation by selecting reference faces. This is incredibly useful for planning setups, preparing stock, and analyzing part dimensions.

However, this functionality is missing in the Design workspace, where such a tool could also be very beneficial — especially when preparing models for CAM, simulations, or exports.

Feature suggestion:
Please make it possible to create a bounding box directly in the Design workspace, with the same simplicity as in the Manufacture workspace:

Select a body or component.

A bounding box is automatically created.

Let the user choose reference faces or planar selections to define orientation.

This would save time and avoid the need to switch workspaces or use workarounds. It would also support workflows that rely on geometric analysis, design automation, or integration with add-ins that use bounding box data.

Thanks for considering this!

Have I got some news that'll blow you away! 😄

We have that feature already, it's called "Bounding Solid". It's parametric to single or multiple model inputs and has the same options as what exists in MFG, including orientation, fixed or relative size box/cylinder, as well as ability to place the coordinate system where you prefer. However, it exists in the Insider version currently. We've been working on it for a while and have most of it well established.

As mentioned, you need to be a member of the Insider Program to access this feature. Membership is free, but it does involve an application process. You can apply here: https://feedback.autodesk.com/key/Fusion360Insider

Here's a quick and dirty demo of it in action:

There are a couple limitations currently, one of them being the lack of STL selection. Currently (and likely for the first public release), it only supports solid body selections.

That looks amazing. When can we expect the live deployment of this update?

I can't give you specific dates, company policy prevents me from doing so. I will say a couple things though;

1) If you want to use it now, you can, you just need to sign up for the Insider program (link is above)

2) It's far enough along in development, we just have a few loose ends to tie up. I'm hopeful that it's at some point this year, but I can't/won't be any more specific than that.

It's not too far now. I was hoping for this release (today) but it hopefully be within the next couple releases
