I am trying to extrude cut from sketch to surface object. I get the preview and click on ok and get the error shown in the image file. I'm using Fusion 360 most current version. I am a student learning how to use the software.

When asking a question concerning a model process, you should always attach it to your Forum post.  Please do so.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

In addition to @jhackney1972 comments  - you should also provide link to reference.

Questions on this design have come up here in the past.

I appreciate you taking to time to respond to my issue. I attached the model. I tried several times making various adjustments to make the extrude complete. I would appreciate your insight.

@gaitano99

The external reference isn't needed.

Either

1. Break Link

or

2. Delete the external reference

and then Attach the *.f3d file here.

My apologies for the link issue. I should have caught that. See attached model with link removed.

Do you have a link to the Tutorial that you are attempting to follow?

First thing I notice is the solid geometry is not completely symmetrical...

Then on closer examination I notice that this sketch is not symmetrical?

I have attached your model with an approximate 6mm deep cutout on the top surface.  The model is a maximum of 8mm thick so this leaves approximately 2mm of material.

If you need help understanding what I did, let me know.  If my Forum post solved your question, please select the "Accept Solution" icon to do three things. First it allows others to find a solution to a similar question, two, it closes the Forum post and last, it acknowledges that you accept the solution given. If you need further help, please ask. If you like to read why "Accept Solutions are important, take a look at this webpage.

I see you added another sketch which is fine. I modified the Extrude Cut Depth from 6mm to 4mm which is what the assignment calls for. I'm now required to make a cut of 3mm on the bottom to reduce weight even further. The frame you're looking at is a Quad Copter Drone. If I can manage to finish it, I'm going to make a 3D print of it and hopefully it will fly once all the parts are attached. I appreciate your solution, John. Nice job.

Ah, I haven’t seen the course but based on the questions that come up here - whoever wrote that tutorial isn’t familiar with best practices in history based parametric modeling techniques.  Certainly you can learn from the tutorial but just keep in the back of your mind that there are better, more robust techniques.

I have another issue with the same model you helped me resolve. It's further along with more parts and features. I am required to do a simulation and have applied the Loads, Forces and Constraints. I tried to generate a mesh and it is throwing two error flags saying Self intersecting issues. I tried various recommended fixes, and they are not working. Can you take a look at this model again.
